Seneschalstown 2-12 Dunshaughlin 1-05
At the fifth time of asking, Seneschalstown finally picked up their first win in this years Tommy Dowd Oil Football League Division 5 with a rather comfortable win over a previously unbeaten Dunshaughlin on a gloriously sunny Tuesday evening in the South Meath town.
Fielding a similarly strong side to the one that narrowly lost out to Navan O’Mahony’s in Round 4, the visitors to Dunshaughlin got off to the ideal start inside the first minute when Seán Commons was quickest to react to a ball which broke from Joe Norris and he rounded the keeper to roll the ball into the net. Dunshaughlin got their first score on the board immediately but Seneschalstown were on front foot for the majority of the opening period and Éamon Finnegan swung over Seneschalstown’s first white flag of the hour in the tenth minute.
Despite the dominance, Seneschalstown were quite profligate in front of the posts and went for long periods without scoring. The defence however stood firm and were able to limit the Dunshaughlin forwards to even less at the other end. A move which started in the defence with a good turnover ended with Bradley Kirwan chipping over after 16 minutes but the hosts got in for their only goal 21 minutes in and it looked like all of Seneschalstown’s good early work was about to unravel. Once again though, the defence provided a platform for the forwards to continue to create chances in front of goal and Owen Mullen finally capitalised on this when he clipped over the last score of the half to bring Seneschalstown’s advantage to two at the break, 1-03 to 1-01.
Both sides were again wasteful again early in the second period before Dunshaughlin reduced the deficit with a point in the 35th minute but from there on, Seneschasltown really upped the intenisty and became much more efficient in the shooting stakes, prompted by their second goal now playing towards the Community College end.
David Gordon’s kickout was won excellently in the middle of the pitch by John Smith and he set Rob Wogan off into acres of space in front of him. Wogan charged towards goal and could have taken his own score but he selflessly laid off to Joey Moore who finished to the net. Moore was about to become a prominent figure in the game and kicked the next score and he followed up seconds later when a shot from Wogan from out the field dropped short and rose highest above the keeper to fist over and now Seneschalstown were really making hay as the sun shone in Dunshaughlin.
The gap was out to seven when half time substitute Aran Carey got up the field to put over off his left before Moore sent over from out on the left as everything he touched by this stage was turning to gold.
Seneschasltown began to roll in some other substitutes and it was one of those sprung from the bench who was next to score when James Conlon, making his seasonal bow for the second team kicked a fine point.
With 52 minutes on the clock, the customary two pointer from Seán Commons duly arrived as launched a shot goalward from way out the pitch. Dunshaughlin eventually broke their scoring duck with two quick fire points to reduce the deficit but the visitors finished strongly with further points from Conlon and fellow substitute Jamie Norris to seal a nine point win to copper fasten Seneschasltown’s first two League points which subsequently moved them off the foot of the table, albeit on scoring difference only.
Next up is another away trip on the morning of the Leinster Final, May 12th in Skryne at 11am.
