FL Div 7: Hill edge Cilles in Piltown

April 29, 2025

Meath Hill's Ciaran Farrelly

Meath Hill held on for a dramatic one-point victory over St. Colmcille in a pulsating clash, running out 1-10 to 0-12 winners after a fiercely contested encounter.

St. Colmcille were quickest out of the blocks, registering the opening point after just two minutes. Meath Hill responded well, winning the resulting kick-out, and although initially dispossessed, quickly regained composure. Tomas Smith showed great determination to turn over possession and delivered a pinpoint pass to Ciaran Farrelly, who won a free. From the resulting attack, Kyle Martin rattled the net with a superbly taken goal, giving Meath Hill the early advantage.

St. Colmcille responded with a point straight from the next kick-out and edged in front again with Mark Tully firing over from close range. The opposition enjoyed a spell of possession midway through the first half and made it count, landing three scores — one of which was a crucial two-pointer.

Despite some scrappy moments and turnovers from both sides, Meath Hill remained firmly in the contest. Ciaran Farrelly kept the scoreboard ticking with a close-range free after Kyle Martin was dragged back. Colin Breslin almost found the back of the net for Meath Hill, only to be denied by a fine block, and St. Colmcille punished this by tapping over a point at the other end.

However, Meath Hill finished the half strongly, with Mark Tully slotting over a free and Matt Carolan driving forward from defence to add another. Dean Martin was unlucky not to put Meath Hill ahead on the stroke of halftime when his effort cannoned off the crossbar. At the break, the sides were level, 1-04 to 0-07.
