O’Mahonys 0-8 Dunboyne 0-8
Defences were definitely on top in this Division 4 camogie league clash as O’Mahonys welcomed Dunboyne to the Trim Road on Sunday evening. With the dry conditions and expansive pitch, spectators would have expected a high scoring encounter from these two sides. However, this game developed into a tense arm wrestle where momentum swung over and back with neither side ever able to fully shake off their opponents.
Dunboyne playing into the dressing rooms end in the opening half, enjoyed the better start and took an early advantage courtesy of two well struck frees from just outside the D. Aoibhinn Kielty eventually got the home side on the board with a free of her own. Some good defending by the O’Mahonys full back line coupled with sharp work in the goals by Lizzy Brennan snuffed out a couple of potential goal threats as Dunboyne looked to convert their early possession into scores. At the other end of the field OMahonys were unlucky themselves not to register a green flag with the final pass to Aine Donegan being inches too high as she had found herself in space on the edge of the square following some good combination play from the forwards.
Half Time Dunboyne 0-6 O’Mahonys 0-3
O’Mahonys with the aid of the breeze for the second half upped their work rate right from the throw in. Claire Mallon and Anna Gardiner in the middle of the field, chased and harried and formed an energetic platform for the home side to mount a comeback. With the Dunboyne puckouts not travelling as far against the breeze, it allowed the home side to keep the pressure on. The influence of both Lauren Patterson at centre back and centre forward Aoibhinn Kielty grew as the game went on. Corner forward Mia McNally spun her defender to register two priceless scores from play. Anna Gardiner added one of her own after a brilliant run through the centre. Good work by Ruth Stewart and Aimee Shankey led to a vital free for O’Mahonys as they pressurised a Dunboyne defender into overcarrying. Duly converted by Kielty, this meant the scores were now level as we entered the last couple of minutes.
Both sides had chances to steal the win in the closing stages, with Dunboyne unluckily off target with a few long range frees while O’Mahonys seemed to have created a decisive overlap on a couple of occasions only for last ditch defending from the Dunboyne rearguard to intercept and clear to safety. And so, a match both sides will feel they could have won ultimately ended in a draw. O’Mahonys will finish the group stages of this competition with an away match in Ashbourne on May 7th with a place in the league final at stake.
