Rathkenny's David Curtis

The hosts came away with both points in this J M Food Services, Football League Division 2, Round 5 game played in Stamullen last Saturday afternoon, April 26th.

St Pats 2-07 Rathkenny 0-11

Referee Liam Reddy threw up the ball just on 4pm, and the visitors had a goal chance in the opening minute that went the wrong side of the posts from a Padraig McKeever effort. The visitors followed this up with two further wides before Jack Gore split the posts for Rathkennys opening point on five minutes. Max McKeena extended the lead two minutes later before the hosts sent over a two-pointer free to level matters with nine minutes played. More wides followed for the visitors before Joey Curtis sent over on sixteen minutes.

The hosts hit back with a point and sixty seconds later found the net following a quick interchange. They followed this up with another two-pointer free on twenty-three minutes to lead by five. David Curtis sent over Rathkennys final first half point on twenty-seven minutes before the hosts sent over the final point of the half to leave it 1-6 to 0-4 at the break.

We had to wait six minutes for the opening score of the second half when David Curtis sent over a two-pointer to leave three between the sides. St Pats opened their second half account with a point on forty-four minutes. Rathkenny were guilty of some wayward shooting in the following minutes, and it came back to bite them when the hosts goaled again on fifty-two minutes. Rathkenny thought they had cleared it off the line, but the referee consulted the umpire, and the green flag was raised. The gap was now out to seven. With fifty-four minutes played Max McKenna sent over a two-pointer. This was followed by a point from David Curtis and there was now four between the teams as we approached fifty-eight minutes. James O’Hare sent over another two-pointer for the visitors as we entered the second minute of injury time, but the hosts hung on. Rathkenny will no doubt rue the big wide count.
