Cortown 1-10 Wolfe Tones 2-11
Despite a spirited second half fightback, Cortown could never truly reel in Wolfe Tones to deny the Gibbstown/Kilberry men a well-deserved victory on Sunday morning.
Playing against the breeze, a sweeping move finished off by Charlie Smith raiding forward to point gave the hosts the perfect start. However, the Tones gradually warmed to their task and started to take control.
Hugh Staunton did keep Cortown in touch with a brace of pointed frees but the visitors struck their first goal midway through the half to give them some breathing space.
Davy Rispin sliced over for the men in yellow but Adrian Crawford completed the first half scoring to ensure the second string led by six at the break, 1-7 to 0-4.
After an initially slow start to the second, a couple of two point frees in succession from Rispin gave Martin McGovern's charges more than a glimmer of hope.
Back within three with the breeze at their backs, Cortown were very much in contention but a soft penalty for the away side essentially sealed the deal with Joe Smyth tucking away the spot kick.
A late consolation goal from Theo Staunton did ensure a grand stand finish but time ran out and Tones held firm for a deserved victory.
