FL Div 5: Seneschalstown remain pointless

Four points separated Seneschalstown and O'Mahony's in the Div 2 FL

Despite a much improved showing, Seneschalstown remain pointless in the Tommy Dowd Oil Football League Division 5 after a late salvo from Navan O’Mahony’s wrestled the two league points on offer for the Hoops on Sunday morning in Fr. Tully Park.

It was the visitors who were quickest out of the blocks with two points in as many opening minutes before Seneschalstown opened their account through a magnificent two point effort from Seán Commons over near the right hand touchline.   O’Mahony’s continued to dominate the opening proceedings and had a two pointer of their own along with another white flag.   However, Seneschalstown began to get more of a foothold around the 10th minute mark as Mattie Cowley got up the pitch from corner back to get his name on the scoresheet and they were unlucky not to edge ahead when Jamie Norris got in on goal but saw his pile driver saved by the keeper and fly over the bar.

The Navan men enjoyed another purple patch up until the 19th minute as they moved 0-09 to 0-04 ahead which Seneschalstown eventually broke with an Alex Finnegan score but O’Mahony’s answered at the other end before Finnegan played a key role in the next big Seneschalstown moment.   Some good build up play from the hosts saw Finnegan gain possession and his hand pass took out the last line of O’Mahony’s defence to play Owen Mullen through on goal and the wing forward clinically dispatched the ball into the corner of the net.

A Bradley Kirwan point was the meat in the sandwich of two other scores for the visitors as they lead by three points at the break.

The sides swapped scores at the outset of the second period with Éamon Finnegan on target for Seneschalstown when his effort kissed the post.   Rob Wogan was the next on target when he chipped over in the 35th minute and Seneschalstown went ahead for the first time in the 36th minute when Éamon Finnegan slalomed his way through a number of challenges as he made his way in from the touchline and his shot squirmed underneath the keeper and into the net.   A second Bradley Kirwan point backed this up as the hosts lead by two.

O’Mahony’s replied in the 41st minute but when Éamon Finnegan claimed a superb mark and took his point from a free from the resulting advantage it looked like Seneschalstown were well placed to push on but they did’t score again from there to the finish.

The next score was going to be decisive and when O’Mahony’s struck for a goal in the 54th minute it was like a dagger through the heart of the home side and when the eventual winners tagged on three points in the remaining minutes the game was beyond Seneschalstown.
