Meath Hill 1-14, Gaeil Colmcille 1-08
Gaeil Colmcille made the trip to Meath Hill on a warm Thursday evening. It was the visitors who made the brighter start, kicking the first three points of the game. The Gaeils capitalised on Meath Hill’s early errors, raising a green flag despite an excellent double save from Martin Tully.
Meath Hill eventually got off the mark through scores from Tomas Smith and Dean Martin, reducing the deficit to four. However, Gaeil Colmcille restored their cushion immediately from the resulting kick-out with a well-taken point from a tight angle.
It was one-way traffic for the men from Kells for much of the first half, but Meath Hill kept battling. Their efforts were rewarded with another point from Smith after a surging run from Ben Gogarty. Gaeil Colmcille should have been further ahead only for crucial blocks by Gogarty and Tully.
Fluency began to emerge in Meath Hill’s attack, with Mark Tully kicking the final two points of the half to close the gap.
Half-time score: Meath Hill 0-05, Gaeil Colmcille 1-05
Meath Hill came flying out of the blocks in the second half, hitting two unanswered points to further eat into the Gaeils’ lead. Gaeil Colmcille responded with a point of their own, but Meath Hill would take control of the scoreboard from that point on.
A goal from Kyle Martin, along with a point from Mark Tully—both heavily influenced by the industrious Dean Martin—swung momentum firmly in Meath Hill’s favour. Colin Breslin also stepped up, bursting through the defence to slot over a fine point.
The Gaeils responded with two points from frees, but that would be their final contribution on the scoreboard. Meath Hill finished the stronger, with points from Ben Gogarty, Colin Breslin, and three more from the boot of Tomas Smith.
