Seneschalstown 2-06 St. Vincent’s 1-12
Entering a third team in League football for the first time in a number of years, Seneschalstown made the short journey up the N2 to Ardcath to play St. Vincent’s in the opening round in Division 10.
With this team being ran on more of a developmental basis, Seneschalstown had a number of younger players who haven’t had a whole lot of game time at adult level this year, plus a couple of more experienced campaigners under the stewardship of Declan Byrne, Mick Dillon and Fraser Thom.
After a couple of early opportunities it was Owen Mullen who came up from wing back to kick over the opening score four minutes in. The home side did enjoy some early dominance with three points on the spin to open their account and move 0-03 to 0-01 by the ninth minute.
Seneschalstown though grew into the game as the half went on. David Fox did well to pick the pieces and chip over after the ball had come off the crossbar in the 11th minute. From the resulting kickout, Seneschalstown had their first goal.
Aran Carey won possession and played a one-two with Shane Mulvany. Carey continued on his run and the ball was eventually played across the square to Niall McCabe who volleyed home from close range.
St. Vincent’s did reply with two points of their own to pull level again bit the visitors ensured they went in level at the break thanks to some quick thinking from Seán Davis who pointed off his left foot using the solo and go rule before McCabe added a point to his goal with one of the last kicks of the half as Seneschalstown lead 1-04 to 0-05.
The visitors made the quicker start to the second half and three minutes in they received another timely boost. A shot from Niall McCabe dropped in around the goalmouth and Aran Carey competed for the dropping ball with the goalkeeper before it broke across the square and Shane Mulvany was quickest to react to palm the ball into the net leaving Seneschalstown five to the good.
St. Vincent’s bench began to make an impact and when they reeled off four points in a row, there was only the minimum between them.
David Fox kicked another score for himself in a bid to break the Vincent’s momentum but it did little to stem the tide. The deciding score came with ten minutes to go when the hosts got in behind the Seneschalstown rearguard for a goal, and when they followed up with a point with seven minutes left St. Vincent’s were two up.
A David Fox free have Seneschalstown hope of rescuing something from the game but a two point free in injury time out the result beyond doubt.
After the game Mick Dillon’s Man of the Match Award, unofficially sponsored by Lucozade Sport was presented to Bradley Kirwan after a strong performance from wing back which was full of running and powerful surges from deep right at the heart of the St. Vincent’s defence.
