Boardsmill 3-18 Dunderry 1-11
Boardsmill continued their winning ways in the Division 7 football league on a sunny warm Sunday morning in Dunderry.
Playing against a stiff breeze in the first half it was the men from the ‘Mill that made all the early running as Danny Dixon kicked two points in the first five minutes. The home side responded with three in a row to edge back in front. From the resulting kickout Neil McLoughlin rose like a salmon to claim a huge kick out before setting up Dixon to fire the ball to the net for the opening goal of the game. James Ashe and Darren McDowell kicked two fantastic wides before Niall Durkan opened his account for the day with a free straight in front of the goals. With Dunderry responding from play with two huge two pointers, the men in blue didn’t wilt as they took control of the game till halftime. Dixon and Durkan kicked two further points before the energetic Stevie Gibbons slotted over off his left. A marauding Cillian Purcell scored a beautiful point from wing back before Neil McLoughlin opened his account for the day. Durkan and Dixon both kicked further points to see the ‘Mill lead 1-10 to 0-8 at halftime.
Playing with the aid of a breeze in the second half it was expected that Boardsmill would kick on and put the game to bed but to Dunderrys credit they kicked the first two points of the second half. James Ashe kicked his first two pointer of the year with a beauty from forty yards. A fortunate goal for Ray Hatton pushed the visitors further ahead as the Dunderry goalkeeper lost the ball in the sun/breeze, Durkan pushed the Boardsmill men further ahead with two quick fire scores from a free and play. The Dunderry men responded with a point of their own, but the game was effectively put to bed when Danny Dixon, the Division 7 Erling Haaland scored his sixth goal in two games. A final Dixon point from play saw the Boardsmill bomb squad introduced in the shape of John Mitchell, Keith Hamilton and Tadhg Cotter. Hamilton exploded into play with a point with his very first touch of the game, a Dunderry goal was to be their final score of the game before the veteran Hamilton kicked two further points off either foot. A great win for Boardsmill saw them gain their second victory of the league campaign.
