FL Div 7: Spoils shared in sunny Rathkenny

The hosts came away with a share of the spoils in this Rays Roofing and Home Renovations, Football League Division 7, Round 2 game played in Rathkenny last Sunday morning, April 6th.

Rathkenny 3-07 Meath Hill 2-10

Referee Paul Scanlon threw up the ball just on 11am in bright sunshine with a strong wind blowing towards the clubhouse end favouring the home side in the first half. The visitors opened the scoring with a point from play inside the opening minute. Several wides followed as Rathkenny did not take advantage of the conditions in their favour early on. Meath Hill extended their lead with a free in the ninth minute. Rathkenny sent another effort wide before the finally got on the scoreboard when David Curtis went through the Meath Hill rearguard before finding Michael McKinnon who dispatched to the corner of the net with ten minutes played. David Curtis then sent over from play with twelve minutes gone to extend the lead to 2 points. The visitors reduced the gap to the minimum with a point on sixteen minutes. With eighteen minutes played Rathkenny custodian produced a good save to block out a goal bound effort to keep the hosts in front. The visitors took the lead in the twentieth minute when they found the net. Straight from the kick out Rathkenny gained possession and when Joey Curtis was fouled, he took the free quickly and went straight through the Meath Hill defence to bury to the corner of the net. 

Meath Hill levelled matters a minute later. As we entered the final minute Joey Curtis put the hosts back in front before the visitors levelled matters with a free in the second minute of injury time.

Meath Hill went back in front inside the opening second half minute. Rathkenny corner back Cal Kealy found himself in space to level matters on thirty-three minutes. The visitors sent over a free on thirty-five minutes and things got better when they won the resultant kick out and found the net from close range to lead by four. After a long-range effort came back off the posts the visiting attack were quickest to react and send over the bar with thirty-seven minutes played. Rathkenny managed to reduce the gap down to two points when corner forward Cathal McKeever found the net with forty-two minutes played. Joey Curtis sent over from play to reduce the gap to the minimum before Jeaic Timmons levelled the scores with a close in free. The visitors then sent over the next two points to lead by two with nine minutes remaining. Rathkenny dug deep and Joey Curtis left one between the sides with a nice score from play. The same player sent over a difficult free with two minutes remaining and the teams were level. No further scores could be found and both teams walked away with a draw.
