Carnaross 2-14 Gaeil Colmcille 2-10
Carnaross picked up a valuable two points after a great tussle with neighbours Gaeil Colmcille in a fabulously presented Grangegodden on Sunday morning.
The Kells side raced into an early lead as they tore the Carnaross rear guard to shreds to land two early goals. Oisín Yore launched over a two point score from distance to kickstart the Hoops. His brother, Cormac, added a fine long range point, as the Ross got to grips with their opponents. The home side were denied a third goal when Shane McNiffe denied a goal-bound effort that was ultimately brought back out for a free by Adrian Corcoran. Just as Gaeil Colmcille were looking comfortable, Charlie Murphy gathered possession on the edge of the square, turned sharply, and ratted the onion bag. Paddy McDermott tagged on a point to leave Kells ahead 2-05 to 1-05 at half time.
The second half saw Carnaross lift the tempo as the game began to properly resemble a local derby. Charlie Murphy, the Yore brothers and Adam Kerins won kickout after kickout but scores were at a premium as the Gaeils snuffed off attacks. Eventually Murphy registered the first score of the second half to reduce the gap to two. The town side kept the Ross at arms length with Paddy Mac landing three placed balls including a sweetly struck 45. Tomás Plunkett and his full back line were mopping up ball expertly. John Reilly swapped his number 2 jersey for number 15 and he began to stretch the Gaeils' rearguard. With scores level entering the final 15 minutes, Carnaross pushed for home with McDermott registering a point from play before a crucial two pointer. Kells emptied the bench to bring on their finishers as the game was in the melting point. Just as it was looking like Carnaross were in the ascendancy, Shane Yore was black carded. But the village men didn't panic and Darragh O’Reilly fisted a point from an acute angle. Pierce Fleming picked up a key possesion after a great turnover but ended up flooring the helpless referee, Adrian Corcoran, who let play develop seeing the funny side of it. The game was won though in a 90 second salvo. First of all, a lightning quick counter attack by the Ross men was expertly finished by Dillon Fox to the bottom corner of the net. Then Shane McNiffe denied the Gaeils full forward a certain goal with a fine save. Both teams registered a final point before the final whistle was blown in sun-kissed Grangegodden.
Carnaross will be relieved to record their first victory of this year's Divsion 4 campaign. Next Sunday, we welcome Nobber to Páirc Naomh Chiarán in the fourth round of the league.
