Moynalvey 1-11 St. Vincent’s 0-11
St. Vincent’s travelled to Moynalvey for this 3rd Round clash of Division 2. On paper expectations were that Moynalvey would be too strong for St. Vincent’s, but games are rarely as clear cut as they appear on paper. The sun was shining on a perfect day for the game as referee Pat Clarke got the game underway.
From the throw in St. Vincent’s broke forward at pace with the ball and Gary Tuite fired over the opening point of the game. The visitors kept the pressure on as Gary Tuite found Conor Harford in space. The Moynalvey goalkeeper fouled Harford and then he was held up as he tried to Solo & Go. Pat Clarke moved the free up and Nigel Hand duly popped it over. Matthew Tuite added a point from a free that had been brought up 50m after dissent from the home side. The home side levelled matters in the 9th minute when their full forward fired a goal past Graham Connor and Mark Crawley from close range. Matthew Tuite fielded a fine ball from a kickout but was fouled. Again, the home side were guilty of not allowing their opposition to play on quickly and the ball was brought forward 50m. Ryan Hand fired over a point with a free off the ground. Moynalvey had the best of the exchanges for the next 5 or 10 minutes and raised the white flag 3 times, all with scores from play. With 24 minutes played, Conor Harford cut the deficit to a point from play after very good build up play from St. Vincent’s. The home side finished the half strongest with a point from play and one from a free in the last 5 minutes to leave a goal between the sides at half time.
Half Time: Moynalvey 1-05 St. Vincent’s 0-05
St. Vincent’s started the second half with plenty of patient build up play and Matt Griffin fired over the opening point of the half from play after 4 minutes. The home side replied with a pointed free. They added another point from play after a free found their wing back in space. St. Vincent’s responded with a point from Robbie Lynch after Adam Andrews had found him with a pass. Halfway through the second half Gary Tuite was fouled as he broke through the defence. Yet again his quick Solo & Go was prevented, leaving Pat Clarke no option but to bring the ball forward. Nigel Hand converted the free from close range. Moynalvey tacked on two points from frees before Adam Andrews broke through on goal, but his shot was just over the bar for a point. Conor Harford scored a lovely 2-pointer from play to leave the minimum between the sides. However, it was the home side who finished the stronger and they rounded out the scoring with two points from play.
Although they were on the wrong side of the result, St. Vincent’s will take some solace in their performance throughout the game. Best for the Ardcath men were Gary Tuite and Conor Harford. Next up we welcome Simonstown to Masterson Park on Saturday 15th April at 4.00pm.
