Kilmainham 2-9 Blackhall Gaels 1-10
After two tough opening league matches Kilmainham welcomed Blackhall Gaels to Kilmainham on Saturday 5th April 2025.
It was a nice evening for football although there was a strong cross field wind. Mickey Hoey got us off the mark with a brilliant two pointer after three minutes. Blackhall were strong at carrying the ball and were well able to pick off their points. Our lads were playing well and were determined to enter half time still in the match. Vice-Captain Declan Mullen shot on goal trickled under the Blackhall keeper and into the net after a well worked team move. Seanie Mahon picked off a nice point after a good lay off by Darren King at full forward. A long diagonal ball into the Kilmainham defence was caught by their pacey corner forward and he buried to the Kilmainham net. The game was tight. Shane Butler scored Kilmainham’s second goal of the match just before half time with an expertly placed finish to the Blackhall net, giving their goalkeeper no chance. We deservedly led by two points at half time.
Half time score: Kilmainham 2-5, Blackhall Gaels 1-6
We had the wind the second half but as is so often the case it made little difference to the game itself. Blackhall fired the first two points of the second half to draw the match level. Larry Morgan and Mickey Newman responded to hit points to push us ahead, but Blackhall kept the pressure on to hit another two points of their own. Both teams pushed for the win. Possession was key as both teams tried to engineer a shot at goal with packed defences making it difficult to get a shot away. Mickey Hoey stepped up when it mattered most hitting a brilliant free from distance to claim a two pointer, his second of the match. Ger Morgan and Jamie O’ Sullivan had chances to finish the match off but both efforts went wide of the target. With time nearly up it was all hands-on deck to try and see out the match as Blackhall went in search of a goal to win it. Some robust defending and some good fortune saw us over the line to claim a much needed two-point victory.
We welcomed back a few players for this match as they answered their club’s call. Paddy Hennigan, Denis Newman, Brain Black, Michael Mahon and Matthew Mullen all togged out to help their club out. Fair play men.
We play Ratoath second team next Sunday 13th April at 1pm in Ratoath. Thanks to everyone that came out to support the team today. It gives the players a lift having people cheer them on.
