The late Paddy Muldoon

Sad to report the passing Paddy Muldoon. Kilskyre and Ballinlough have paid tribute to the one of their own on social media.

Kilskyre Hurling Club

Paddy Muldoon is the true definition of a GAA stalwart. As clubman, player, coach, selector, committee member, chairperson but most of all supporter, he certainly flew the flag for Kilskyre Hurling Club. With his 30 year playing career with the club, Paddy (The Hound) Muldoon will be one to add to the history books.

The Muldoon family were central to the foundation of Kilskyre Hurling Club, starting out in McCanns Field in Sarahstown, before the establishment of the present-day Brian O’Higgins Pairc in 1905. Since then, the club has never been without a Muldoon togging out. Paddy was a very proud dad and grandfather seeing his children and now grandchildren, lining out for the juvenile hurling and newly formed Camogie teams.

Paddy’s playing career is well documented in an interview with the Hogan Stand in 1998. Suffice to say he was a constant presence for the club as an adult player from 1974 right up to 1998, something not too many players can boast. He played at all levels with the club; Senior, Intermediate and Juvenile teams, and as the club rode the peaks and troughs of success and disappointment, Paddy was always there to commit.

Paddy did a spell with the County, battling with the great Paddy Quinn from Kilyon for the number one spot. He recalls some of his county highlights, playing against two of the greats of hurling at that time, Galway and Offaly. But his best days were with his club winning multiple Junior and Intermediate Championships. The Junior Championship in 1992 was particularly special to Paddy, as he recalled in an interview that the team of ‘ 92 was “possibly the best Junior team we ever had here in Kilskyre".

Paddy you will be missed by all, but your contribution to Kilskyre Hurling Club is one of your greatest legacies. What gives us heart is knowing that you have left behind many future generations to keep the Muldoon tradition alive. We hope you enjoy your birds eye view.

From all of us in Kilskyre Hurling and Camogie Club we extend our deepest sympathies to the Muldoon Family on the very sad passing of Paddy.

Ballinlough GFC

All of us in Ballinlough GFC were saddened to learn of the passing of Paddy Muldoon recently.

While Paddy had stints of football with Kilallon and Ballinlough over the years, it was in the black and amber of Kilskyre where he really excelled.

A career spanning three decades and 20 years, culminating in four county medals for Paddys Mantlepiece, along with a few appearances with the Meath county hurlers along the way too.

The first of his medals came in his debut year of 1978 and the last some 16 years later in 1994.

A Club Chairman, coach and confidante with Kilskyre, “The Hound” as he was affectionately known, transcended time with his wit and wisdom, and was as comfortable with men of his own age profile as he was with younger members of the club, always happy to impart any bit of knowledge he had accrued over the years.

While I could take chunks out of the interview Paddy did with Hoganstand upon his playing career retirement in 1998, the piece is best read in its entirety and the link to it is attached here:

On the Ballinlough GFC side of things, while Paddy never set the world alight as a player, he was always a consistent and loyal supporter of the club, and his most proudest moment has to have being watching his son Podge raise the Mattie McDonnell Cup as winning Captain when Ballinlough claimed the 2014 Intermediate Championship.

Paddy’s sons Podge and Dereck have both served the club with aplomb as players and now act as coaches for our U-7 team, of which Paddy’s grandsons D.J and Iarlaith are both important members, while Granddaughter Hannah has lined out for our underage girls team.

From all of us in Ballinlough GFC we extend our deepest sympathies to the Muldoon Family on the very sad passing of Paddy.
