Historic Night Under The Hometown Lights
St Peter’s, Dunboyne 5-13 Skryne 0-12
May 16th, 1993 was an absolutely dreadful evening in terms of weather as St Peter’s Dunboyne held the official opening of what were then their newest facilities at the time, the pitch and dressing rooms on the Rooske Road, or quite simply, Rooske as it is known locally, to differentiate between the different sports fields.
Rain bucketed down as Kildare won by 0-14 to 0-11. 32 years on there were no such weather concerns as another page in the club’s history turned.
Thanks to the playing of the first adult fixture under lights in Dunboyne as the club’s senior footballers took on Skryne in Round 3 of the All County League Div. 1 in Kepak Park.
Cliche though it may be, the outcome on this historic night really was a case of goals winning games.
A Donal Lenihan penalty being recorded as the first time a green flag was required in the new field. Not that there was much of a wait for the second, with Meath U-20 panelist Cian Duggan also netting as the hosts led by 2-08 to 0-07 at half time.
When Ger Robinson’s team bagged a third ‘major’ very quickly after the restart it ended the affair as a contest before the black and ambers filled the onion bag twice more to round off a historic night.
