Seneschalstown 2-09 Wolfe Tones 2-14
Seneschalstown remain pointless in the P.R Coyne & Sons Football League Division 1 after a five point defeat to Wolfe Tones in Fr. Tully Park on Thursday evening. While the visitors were deserving winners on the night, the key period was in the run up to half time when the Tones reeled off 1-02 on the bounce in the final five minutes of the half to go from a point down to four up at the break.
Despite Wolfe Tones dominating possession early on, it was Seneschalstown who were first to trouble the scoreboard when Alan Mulvany let fly from inside the new arc. All of Wolfe Tones early possession eventually told as they clipped over the next two points to move ahead but the frantic start to the game was only about to ratchet up a level in the 7th minute.
Donie Commons claimed Jamie Norris’ long sickout in midfield and he spotted Alan Mulvany in space. Mulvany then set Robbie Finnegan off towards goal and the number 11 tore up the ground before crashing the ball in past Stephen Sheppard in the Wolfe Tones goal. Looking to build on that massive boost, Seneschalstown did the exact opposite as last years county finalists went down the other end of the pitch with Dan O’Neill raising a green flag for the Tones with a superb finish off the underside of the crossbar.
Two further scores, including a two point effort followed for the Gibbstown/Kilberry/Oristown parish men as they pulled four clear after 12 minutes but Seneschalstown remained valiant and soon found their second goal.
After some patient build up play, full-forward Eoin Finnegan played a superb defence splitting ball into the path of Niall Hickey who was bearing down on goal. Hickey could have shot himself but unselfishly laid the ball across the square to Donie Commons who lifted it soccer style into the roof of the net. Once again though the Tones was commendable as they kicked the next two scores to almost cancel the Commons goal.
The home side though were not for lying down and there was only the minimum between them when Jamie Norris kicked a two point free from out on the left in the 20th minute to reduce the margin to the minimum. Two minutes later Seneschalstown in front when full back Hickey, who had set up the earlier goal found himself in space centrally outside the two point arc and he found the target to edge the home side in front.
Seneschalstown though, wouldn’t score again for the remainder of the half as Wolfe Tones had a dominant spell up to the interval registering 1-02 which left the scoreboard reading 2-09 to 2-05 at the end of a thoroughly enjoyable half for the paying spectators.
The second half was much quieter on the scoreboard front and was probably more akin to a game under the old rules as both sides struggled in front of goal. It took nine minutes for the elusive first score to arrive which went the way of Paddy Martin’s charges before Danny Waters kicked the only other score in the third quarter for Seneschalstown, a fine right footed effort from just inside the arc.
Wolfe Tones greater experience shone in the second half and every time the hosts looked like coming back into it, they could answer at the other end. The sides traded points at the beginning of the final 15 minutes, with Jamie Norris coming forward to kick a 45’.
Wolfe Tones had moved five clear again with five minutes to go but there was still a chance that Seneschalstown could take something from the game when Norris nailed another two point free via the post but try as they might they couldn’t get any closer as Wolfe Tones kicked a couple of insurance scores to win by five.
