Meath 0-19 Westmeath 0-12
Meath made it two from two in the Leinster U20 Football Championship with this five point victory over Westmeath played in perfect conditions at Kinnegad.
After beating Dublin in round one Meath set a blistering pace to the opening 15 minutes of this encounter that effectively sealed the win.
The outstanding Michael McIver got the ball rolling with the opening score. The St. Vincents Ardcath star followed with a two pointer and by the end of the quarter had kicked five points. John Harkin, Liam Jennings, Ben Corkery and half back Finn White raised white flags as Cathal O Bric’s men move 0-10 to 0-0 in front.
The home side, who kicked five wides in the opening quarter got off the mark when Finn Duffy pointed a free on the 20th minute. Duffy was in for a goal a minute later but a brilliant block from Meath full back Rian Early denied the home side the opening goal. Shane Ormsby and Duffy added to the Westmeath tally but Meath finished with points from Cian Commons and Harkin to go in at the break 0-12 to 0-4 in front.
It was all about keeping the scoreboard ticking over for Meath in the second half. By the 10th minute they had extended their lead with points from Jamie Murphy and a Rian Stafford brace.
Westmeath enjoyed their best spell in the game between the 10th and 20th minute. Substitute Taylor Slevin kicked a two pointer and further scores from Shane Corcoran and Ormsby gave them some belief. Any sign of a come back was dashed when Tom Burke was sent to the line by referee David Hickey after picking up a second yellow. Meath who had been under some pressure until then sent over the next three scores through McIvor, Jennings and Commons to send them well on the road to victory.
Up next for the winners are Offaly while Westmeath have a winner takes all clash with Dublin.
