FL Div 11: Mary's impress against Kilmainhamwood

March 31, 2025

St Marys Caimin Hughes

St Marys 3-14 Kilmainhamwood 1-5

St Marys started their division 11 campaign with an impressive win over Kilmainhamwood in Donore.

Both teams were much changed from their last meeting in the Tailteann Shield Semi Final 3 weeks previously, with Marys able to welcome back some players who have come back to the squad this year.

The early exchanges were even, with both sides trying to fashion early chances. The away side breaking from deep was causing some defensive headaches, but gradually Marys settled into the game and took control. The impressive Caimin Hughes got in for an early goal, with Eoin Jackson, Liam Lynch, Cian O’Brien and Robbie Gallagher also getting on the scoreboard, the sole reply from the visitors a free to leave the home side 1-4 to 0-1 up at the end of the first quarter. Kilmainhamwood then hit a purple patch, a well struck 2 pointer was then followed by an excellent finish from their wing back in off the frame of the goal.

The arrears were reduced to 1 and the home side had to find a way to regain control. They did just that when Gallagher found himself in the right place to punch home a Liam Lynch attempt to the net and the cushion was back to 4. Another Hughes score rounded off the first half scoring to leave the half time score 2-6 to 1-4 in favour of the home side.

The second half seen Marys pick up where they left off at the end of the first half. Cathal Sheridan and Jackson were getting a real hold on proceedings around the middle of the field and the home side began to push on, scores from Adam Craven, Jackson, as well as a second goal from Hughes seen Marys comfortable heading to the final stages of the game. The away side to their credit never threw the towel in and created chances going forward, but found themselves being thwarted by a stubborn Mary’s defence, with Tadhg Lynch and Darragh Maher to the fore in particular. The home side made several changes late on and to their credit didn’t seem to disrupt their rhythm. There was still time for one of the scores of the game as Hughes struck an excellent two pointer to round proceedings off. St Marys will be happy with their nights and work, with attention now turning to Thursdays Round 2 Division 6 fixture away to Ratoath.
