FL Div 3: Depleted Kilmainham no match for Kilbride

March 31, 2025

Kilmainham's Mickey Newman

Kilbride 4-18, Kilmainham 2-8

After a difficult opening round league match against Walterstown last week, we headed for Kilbride on Saturday 29th March 2025.

We were down to the bare bones all week with injuries and lads not available. In contrast Kilbride are a team on the up. Full of youth and they have some excellent footballers. We mustered up 17 players and headed for Kilbride knowing that we would be up against it. A strong start to the match had us well in the match. Kilbride hit the first point of the match after a minute. Johnny Quinlan hit a sublime point from distance with the outside of his boot after 4 minutes. Shane Morgan hit a good point as we settled into the match. Johnny Quinlan hit his second point of the match after 7 minutes. Then disaster struck. A poor cross field ball by full back Harry Newman was read by the Kilbride half forward and he buried the ball in the Kilmainham net after 11 minutes. A real sucker punch. Kilbride were ahead. Kilbride hit further goals in the 18th and 24th minute to take complete control of this match as we approached half time. All our good work and good play was undone by some poor defending for all 3 goals.

Half time score: Kilbride 3-7, Kilmainham 0-4

We faced an uphill battle in the second half as Kilbride had the wind and a strong half time lead. Like last week to our lad's credit, they kept going and fought for every ball. Kilbride ran in changes with every player coming on was as strong as the players going off. A brilliant solo goal by man of the match Mickey Newman was met with loud cheers. The Kilbride goalie had no chance as the ball deflected in off the crossbar. Mickey hit another incredible free against the wind from well over 45 yards out to raise the orange flag for a 2 pointer. Kilbride kept the score board ticking over and hit a few nice 2 pointers of themselves. Kieran Needle stepped up and hit a well taken penalty, sending the keeper the wrong way after the Kilbride goalie was penalised for not getting up off the ball after a scramble in the Kilbride goal mouth. Kilbride finished the match with a 4th goal with the last kick of the match. A free from 13 meters was taken quickly and finished to the net by the Kilbride full forward.

Congratulations to Adam McManus who made his senior debut for Kilmainham. Also a mention to Jamie O’ Sullivan who came on as a sub to help the club out despite been injured. The games are coming thick and fast for our depleted squad. We play Blackhall Gaels next Saturday 5th April at 5pm in Kilmainham.

The main highlight of this match was the bus trip up to Kilbride. Despite the poor result it was a great team bonding trip with plenty of craic along the way, which is what it’s all about.

Best for Kilmainham were: Mickey Newman, Declan Mullen, Shane Morgan and Stephen Newman.

Kilmainham: Dean Peppard, Padraig Caffrey, Harry Newman, Stephen Newman, Declan Mullen, Shane Morgan (0-2), Johnny Quinlan (0-2), Larry Morgan, Mickey Newman (1-4), Ger Morgan, Kieran Needle (1-0), Freddie Newman, Shane Butler, Darren King, Phily Mahon.

Subs: Adam McManus for Shane Butler and Jamie O’ Sullivan for Dec Mullen.
