Boardsmill 4-12 Gaeil Colmcille 0-08
Fresh from their Tailteann Shield success, Boardsmill kept the winning run going with a hard fought win over a dogged Gaeil Colmcille in round 1 of the Football League at Boardsmill.
Boardsmill opened the scoring from the boot of Danny Dixon, as he cut in from the right to curl over off his left foot. The Kells men responded and added two points of their own. James Ashe leveled the scoring after ten minutes with his only score of the game (somehow). A wandering Jim Roche, scored a monster point from centre back as he drove straight at the Gaeil Colmcille goal before slotting over with his left foot. Dixon added another from his right foot this time to double the lead. The Wily Neil McLoughlin claimed the next kick out to set up James Ashe to square the ball to Dixon to fist to the net for the games opening goal. The visitors responded with one of the scores of the game, as a huge point from distance split the posts. Wingback Ray Hatton, showed his pace and composure to score a well take point following a huge kick out from Andrew Gallagher. The final action of the first half saw Dixon break at pace before slotting to the bottom corner to leave Boardsmill leading 2-06 to 0-03 at halftime. Wayne Gretzky once said "you miss 100% of the shots you don't take" for James Ashe he missed 97% of the ones he took in the first half, including a garryowen and a shot at goal that went out for a sideline.
Playing with the elements in the second half it was the men from Kells who kicked the opening two scores of the second half, a trade mark solo dummy from Liam O' Brien gave him the time and space to kick the ball over the bar to get the Mill' up and running. From here the home side kicked on with Dixon and McLoughlin adding well taken scores. Boardsmill introduced their very own bomb squad in the shape of Keith Hamilton, Alex Yourell, Tadhg Cotter and Stevie Gibbons. John Mitchell registered a score before Dixon grabbed a point from a mark. The lively Stevie Gibbons scored two points to push the mill ahead before Danny Dixon secured his hat trick with an emphatic finish. Keith Hamilton followed in James Ashes footsteps with a well taken wide from a scoreable position. To Gaeil Colmcilles credit they responded with three scores in a row to stem the tide before Dixon scored his 4th goal of the game with the final kick of the match. A good win for Boardsmill with strong displays from Jamie Doonan, Cillian Purcell, Andrew Gallagher and Danny Dixon.
