Ballinabrackey 2-12 Wolfe Tones 1-13
Saturday afternoon was not the ideal weather to be playing a football match but it had to be done as Ballinabrackey welcomed Wolfe Tones to The Boyne Park for Round Two of the ACFL.
Tones played up the field in the first half with a very strong wind behind them. It was a cracking start for Ballinabrackey as not even a minute on the clock and Danny Quinn had the empire reaching for the green flag. Wolfe Tones used the wind advantage they had in the first half as their first score of the game was a two pointer. Tones could have had a goal themselves in the opening minutes only for the ball to bounce off the crossbar. Quinn followed straight up with another goal from the home side. Giving us all signals this was going to be an action game with very little time to catch your breath. Tones brought their shooting boots trying to build up the best gap they could as the wind seemed to carry points over with ease for them. After Ballinabrackey's second goal there seemed to be a lull in their men hitting the target as Tones outscored them 7 points to no score admittedly they had gotten 2 two pointers within that. With approx 10 minutes left in the half it was the Bracks who finished the half strong outscoring Tones 3 points to 1. Sean Kavanagh added his name to the tally, as he stepped up to add a point to Quinns earlier two goals. Quinn got the last kick of the half with a two pointer of his own. This meant as both teams headed for the dressing rooms at half time it was Tones with their noses just in front.
The Bracks came out in the second half hitting the ground running as they got 6 points all without reply, Quinn added a two pointer free, David Carroll not wanting to miss out on the action added his own two pointer from play, Quinn and Niall Smullen also added theirs from play also. It was looking like Ballinabrackey were full steam ahead as they defended well pushing Tones out the field. All of a sudden, 17 minutes into the half, a burst from Tones saw them marching down on Pluck goal raising the green flag themselves. This was followed up by a free for Tones leaving two points between the sides as we ticked to the remaining 10 minutes. Quinn and Smullen kept the scoreboard ticking for the home side as they added another point each. Tones never a team to lie down scored the next two points to bring it back to a two point game. Quinn wrapped up Ballinabrackey's scores for the day as he slotted a free as we headed into the dying minutes of the game. Tones needed a goal to level dropping the ball into the square everyone trying to get their hands on it but it went over the bar for a point. Giving Ballinabrackey a two point win two weeks on the bounce.
Ballinabrackey's Seniors have a weekend off next week as they prepare to face Summerhill the following week in Summerhill.
