Oldcastle 1-07 Dee Rangers 0-11
Dee Rangers traveled to Millbrook on Friday night for the third round of the division one league.
Oldcastle started well, recording their first score of the night after only two minutes; a pointed free from Sinead Coyle.
Oldcastle midfielder Orla Smith won the subsequent kick out and delivered a clever ball over the top of the Dee Ranger defence into the path of wing forward Ciara Brown. Brown made no mistake and finished to the back of the net putting her team four ahead.
Dee Rangers keeper Sinead Carolan played the next kick out short, to her corner back Ellen Cassidy. Cassidy carried up the field and laid a lovely ball off to centre half forward Eva McConnell, McConnell spotted the Dee Ranger centre half back Alanna Reilly who had made a cutting run up the centre of the pitch, McConnell hand passed into Reilly’s path and she recorded the teams first score of the night with an excellent long range effort.
Oldcastle continued to apply the pressure and worked the ball up to full forward Sinead Coyle who again was fouled on the 45, Coyle took the free quickly and took a return pass from Emma Healy before slotting the ball over the bar to put four between the sides again.
Dee Ranger midfielder Lisa Young won the kick out and delivered a sweet pass into the lively corner forward Ava Curran, Curran turned on her left and popped the ball over the bar from the 45.
Dee Rangers were beginning to get up to the pace of the match with Lisa Young again winning the midfield battle, Lisa carried the ball forward and slotted it over the bar reducing her teams deficit to two.
Oldcastle’s Orla Smith impressed with a pacy solo run from her own half back line, all the way to the Dee Rangers forward line, Smith fed the ball to corner forward Emma Healy who was happy to record her first score of the night.
Oldcastle were on the attack again and looked dangerous when full back Orlaith Duff sensed the danger and read the Oldcastle ball well cutting it out with determination. She passed the ball off to Emma Halpenny who fed Ava Curran a sweet pass, Curran kicked the ball over the bar for her second score of the night.
Dee Rangers full forward Bríona Rowe turned over the Oldcastle kick out and slotted it over the bar, leaving the bare minimum between the sides.
Emma Healy and Bríona Rowe traded points before the Oldcastle free taker put two between the sides again with a fine free from the 45. Bríona Rowe got on the score board again with a well worked score from play.
Oldcastle were ahead by one at the half time whistle. Oldcastle 1-05 Dee Rangers 0-7.
Again it was Oldcastle who recorded the first score of the half with a well worked point from Sinead Coyle. Substitute Grace Durnin and Ava Curran combined to cut open the Oldcastle defence, Ava was happy to take her point, her third of the evening.
Free takers Sinead Coyle and Ava Curran traded points, still the minimum between the sides.
Both sides had plenty of possession but both defences worked hard to ensure that no scores were recorded. It wasn’t until the 54th minute, that the next score of the game came, a point from play by debutant Ava Curran. This saw the sides level for the first time in the game.
Spurred on by this score Dee Ranger midfielder Lara O’Neill won the kick out and lobbed a dangerous ball into the Oldcastle square, Bríona Rowe was quickest to react and popped the ball over the bar from close range, putting her side ahead in the dying minutes of the game.
Oldcastle managed one last attack, Emily McCann worked the ball up the wing to Nadine Wade who passed it off to Ciara Gilsenan, Gilsenan found Olra Smith who was swarmed by a sea of Dee Ranger players, a free was awarded on the 45. Free taker Sinead Coyle stepped up but was unlucky to hit the post and the ball went out to the left and wide.
The final whistle blew and Dee Rangers were victors by the smallest of margins.
