St Peter’s, Dunboyne 1-15 Gaeil Colmcille 1-13
Robbie McCarthy marked his return to the Dunboyne colours after several years away by posting a magnificent seven points as the black and ambers came away from Grangegodden with their second win from as many outings in the PR Coyne FL Div. 1 after a typically entertaining tangle between the familiar foes.
McCarthy’s haul included three two-point efforts, one an audacious outside-of-the-boot curler identical to what Jack McCarron did twice in Pairc Tailteann on Sunday last. Or for those of us who can remember back a bit further, akin to the mesmeric score conjured by Ciaran McDonald for Mayo to beat Dublin in 2006.
Welcoming back Donal Lenihan for his first start of the season and with former Waterford player Jason Gleeson leading the attack, those who claimed the Mooney Cup on their sole occasion back in 2014 led by 1-10 to 0-09 at the break with Cathal Melia tucking away his now customary goal.
Unsurprisingly, the hosts did come roaring back with experienced heads Oisin Reilly, Liam Ferguson, Seamus Mattimoe, Brian Hanlon and the burgeoning Andrew Gormley got them back to parity at 1-13 apiece.
Before, fittingly, Dunboyne’s old double act, McCarthy and Lenihan clipped over scores to put the points on the road.
