Moynalvey picked up two points on the road in round two of the J.M Food Services Div. 2 league on Saturday afternoon with an eight point win over Rathkenny.
Rathkenny 0-2 Moynalvey 1-7
Moynalvey remain unbeaten after two rounds with three points from a possible four following this easier than expected round two win over Rathkenny.
On a miserable afternoon for football in slippy underfoot conditions along with a tricky wind, this game proved to be a low scoring affair with the home side especially finding scores hard to come by with just two points throughout the hour, the first of those coming in the 45th minute.
The game’s first score didn’t arrive until the 10th minute when Barry Walsh spilt the Rathkenny uprights after Padraic Harnan had won the Moynalvey kickout.
The second point could have easily been a goal when David McLoughlin blazed over the Rathkenny cross bar from close range in the 14th minute.
A quick turnaround sixty seconds later saw the same player splitting the Rathkenny posts again after Moynalvey won their opponents kickout.
McLoughlin fired over a free for his third and final score of the opening half to leave the score board read 0-4 to 0-00 in favour of the visitors when referee Martin Dawson blew for half time.
Six minutes after the restart Moynalvey extended their advantage to seven points when Padraic Harnan laid the ball across goal to his cousin William who palmed home to the corner of Charlie Cullen’s net for the game’s only goal, 1-4 to 0-00.
A further pair of McLoughlin points left Moynalvey 1-6 to 0-00 ahead, before the home side registered their first score on the three quarter hour mark when Eoghan Heavey fired over.
David McLoughlin added his sixth point of the afternoon in the 52nd minute and Rathkenny scored their second and the final score of a low scoring game when Max McKenna converted a free in the 57th minute, meaning Moynalvey ran out comfortable eight point winners on a 1-7 to 0-2 score line.
Moynalvey’s defensive intensity resulted in turnover after turnover with Conor Harnan, Brian O’Reilly, David Regan and Ciaran Harnan in particular to the fore, Padraic Harnan and Craig Gilsenan dominating the middle third, while David McLoughlin top scored up front.
Next up for Moynalvey in a fortnight’s time is a round three tie against St. Vincents on Saturday 5th April.
