Oldcastle 0-10, St. Pats 0-09
It was a cold, wet, grey and miserable outing in Millbrook this afternoon, and the weather wasn’t great either. The first half was a penance in the driving rain, with a slippy ball and the driving wind the standard of football was dire, reflected in the half-time score of four points apiece.
The second half saw the rain let up a bit and the wind died down, making slightly more favourable conditions. St. Pat’s were quick off the mark, with a point from the first play of the ball, which CJ soon cancelled out with a free. A Cillian Connell intercept was fed upfield via Oran O’Reilly, to Dylan Garrigan and in to CJ again for a nice score. St. Pats took the next, level again, and the next, to go ahead.
An unfortunate free, awarded to the opposition as Oldcastle didn’t have enough lads back, saw them go two up. Great work from Thomas Sheridan to secure the ball saw her head for Garrett O’Reilly, who took a lovely point. St. Pats came back with another point, to leave the gap at two again. A long period went by with both sides shooting wides, before Oldcastle closed the gap somewhat with a Jason Scully point. Just one behind now but into injury time, the seconds ticking away, when a Dylan Garrigan intercept was fed on via Paddy Rahill, on to Conor Delaney, to Jason Scully, backpassed to Ryan Kevin, to Garrett, back to Jason, back to Garrett again, and like a golden-haired messiah sent from God (or Cavan), he coolly shot her between the posts, from behind the arc, to put two points on the board and leapfrog Oldcastle ahead! A great finish to a bad match, St. Pats had one more opportunity but nothing came of it, the final whistle blew, and Oldcastle survived by the skin of their teeth!
