FL Div 3: Convincing win for Walterstown in Kilmainham

March 23, 2025

Kilmainham's Michael Hoey

Kilmainham 1-6, Walterstown 5-12

A tough opening league fixture awaited us as we welcomed Walterstown to a rain soaked and bitterly cold Kilmainham on Saturday 22nd March 2025. We can be happy enough with the opening 10 minutes of the match as we were working hard defensively off the ball and denying the intermediate any easy shots and we probably should have had a few scores ourselves but left the chances behind us. A big turnover by Walterstown in the Kilmainham back line led to their first goal of the match and within a minute they had another goal after more poor defending. Terence Daly was forced off injured in goals and Johnny Quinlan stepped in. Johnny spent as much time picking the ball out of the net as he did kicking it out! They game had flipped in their favour and they had begun to gain full control. Our confidence had been rocked. Walterstown started to turn us over too easily and hit us for another two goals. A fifth goal was to follow before the break to all but seal this match. Michael Hoey hit two points from frees as the half time whistle blew.

Half time score: Kilmainham 0-4, Walterstown 5-2

Pride was all that was at stake for us in the second half. No tactical switch would make any difference as a superior Walterstown side were in full control of this match. To our lads credit they fought hard to stop any more goals from going in and remained competitive in the second half at least. A brilliant solo goal by Mickey Newman after a now custom run from deep was finished emphatically to the bottom corner of the Walterstown net. Walterstown were able to keep the scoreboard ticking over and use their bench as the game finished out with a comfortable win for the visiting team. Kilmainham can have no complaints about the result but will be bitterly disappointed with the poor defending for the goals and some of the wayward passing.

We have no time to feel sorry for ourselves and must regroup and recover quickly as we face a similarly tough round two clash next Saturday 29th March against another strong intermediate side in Kilbride in Kilbride at 4pm.

A big thank you to everyone that came out to support us yesterday on a horrible day for football. See you all next Saturday.
