Navan O’Mahony’s 2-16 St Michaels 0-11
A strong second half showing against the wind from O’Mahony’s was required to make it two from two wins in the Div 2 FL, played in a wintery conditions in Carlanstown on Saturday afternoon.
With the wind behind them, O’Mahony’s were quick to attack but the first attack went wide. The first score came after two minutes, when Oisin O’Brien set up Evan Coffey. The latter added to this, with a second point two minutes later. A third score from Aodhan Mallon came in the fourth minute. St Michael’s first shot came five minutes later and was wide of target.
Robbie Keelaghan stood his ground well while being tackled by two players, to kick a narrow point and four minutes later Coffey extended the lead with a well-taken goal. Midway through the half, St Michael’s added their first score with Paddy Yourell and Mike O’Reilly responding quickly with points.
The hosts, in spite of being against a strong wind, dominated the final quarter and kicked four points in eight minutes. By the time the referee blew the half time whistle, only four points separated the sides.
Navan O’Mahony’s 1-06 St Michaels 0-05
O’Mahony’s were keen to make up for lost ground and started the second half quickly, with three points, two from Mallon and one from Keelaghan. St Michael’s clawed it back in the fifth minute to leave five in it with an impressive two-pointer.
From here on in, it was largely one way traffic on the scoreboard. St Michaels had a number of wides with the wind, as O’Mahony’s had in the first half. Midway through the second half, nine points separated the teams with Mallon, Yourell and Paddy Dillon all raising white flags.
The remainder of the match saw Keelaghan, Mallon and Coffey add to their earlier points tally, while the latter picked up his second goal. Another two-pointer from the hosts reduced the deficit and they kicked the last score of the game as the final whistle went.
