Trim's Tom Carmody

Moynalvey 2-12 Áth Troim 1-15

Trim can count themselves lucky to have shared the points in a match they should have won in this first round league match away to Moynalvey on Saturday afternoon (March 15th). They dominated long periods in the first half of this match but allowed Moynalvey back in to contention in a scrappy second half performance.

Trim started well and took control early on. Tom Carmody opened the scoring in the second minute when he collected a great Sean Foley pass and put iy over the bar from close range. Two minutes later a great move from Trim saw Sean Foley tee up a great pass to Tadgh Carty who palmed to the net.

David Lernihan added a great two pointer shortly afterwards and Tom Carmody added a further point in the 12th minute to give Trim a 1-5 to 0-0 lead. Their momentum was broken when the referee inexplicably allowed a Moynalvey goal when Eoin O’Reilly was tackled under a dropping ball and dispossessed in the small rectangle and the ball ended up in the back of the net. Tom Carmody responded with a good point a minute later.

Trim’s rhythm was broken but Moynalvey failed to capitalise on the possession they enjoyed over the next ten minutes when they missed several chances and only added two points in the 19th and 21st minute.

Sean Foley got the score of the match, a point from the narrowest of angles, after a great run to restore the Trim lead while Moynalvey responded with a pointed free a minute later. Before the interval David Lernihan (2 pointer) and Tom Carmody from a free added to the Trim total while Moynalvey responded with points in the 25 th and 28th minute to leave the half time score Moynalvey 1-5 Trim 1-9.

Moynalvey showed they meant business from the throw in following the break when they scored three points without reply in the opening ten minutes and totally dominated the play. Had their shooting been more accurate they could have held a substantial lead. Trim struggled to get in to the game but Harry Purcell steadied the ship a little with a point in the 10th minute and Tom Carmody swopped points with Moynalvey in the 16th minute to leave the minimum of margin between the teams and he followed up with another two minutes later to ease the pressure a little.

But Moynalvey still had the upper hand and were dominating play but failing to convert it into scores until the 21st minute when they tore the Trim defence apart to score a brilliant goal which they followed up with a great two pointer to give a Moynalvey a two point lead with eight minutes to go.

Trim struggled to find their rhythm all through this half and move after move broke down until the 28th minute when Tom Carmody pointed a close in free to leave a two point margin. Trim pressed hard in the closing minutes and were awarded a free on the 45 metre mark. Cool as a cucumber with the last kick of the game Tom Carmody took the free and scored the two pointer to level the match on the final whistle.

Trim can count themselves lucky to have escaped with a point in this match but a positive aspect of this result was that it was eked out in a game where everything was going against them in the second half but they refused to give in. Their first half display was top class with high fielding, fast off the ball movement, great passing and a sturdy defence. If they can put seventy minutes like this they will be formidable.
