Seneschalstown 1-12 Ballinabrackey 0-17
Two late scores for Ballinabrackey left Seneschalstown empty handed at the end of this opening round encounter in the P.R Coyne & Sons sponsored Football League Division 1 played in Fr. Tully Park on Saturday afternoon. Seneschalstown will be left to rue the outcome of this game as last years runners up only took the lead for the second time in the game as the clock entered second half injury time and from there Seneschalstown could not find an equaliser.
The only other time the Bracks lead was in the opening exchanges when they were first on the scoreboard in the second minute. Backed by the breeze though, Seneschalstown began to get on top for the majority of the opening period and both of their first two scores were routine Cian Hosie frees after the referee advanced the ball 50 metres on both occasions.
The home side continued their strong start when in the tenth minute Seneschalstown worked their way out of a tight corner before Niall Hickey managed to bundle the ball into the corner of the net to move Seneschalstown four in front. Ballinabrackey answered with a point before Dylan Keating kicked his first of the hour in 17th minute. Cian Hosie clipped over after a sweeping upfield move less than a minute later and it was three points in as many minutes when Alan Mulvany found his range after Cormac Carolan made a vital interception of the centre of the pitch.
Ballinabrackey were able to keep themselves in touch throughout, but a pair of Cian Hosie frees rounded out the half for the home side which left them five up at half-time, 1-08 to 0-06.
The visitors made a quick start to the second half with three points in a row inside two minutes before Liam Dillon chipped over at the back post after Seneschasltown countered quickly from their own half. In the the 34th minute, Ballinabrackey kicked the only two point score of the hour and it would have a big bearing on the outcome. Seneschalstown’s response to this was impressive with Ronan Conneely on target and Dylan Keating kicked a fine point from the left hand side which had the home side a goal up with twenty minutes to go.
The South Meath men had it back to one by the 48th minute before Donie Commons popped over what would be Seneschalstown’s last score. Ballinabrackey hauled themselves level in the final quarter and even though it looked like neither team wanted to win it at certain stages thereafter, two late scores tipped the balance in Ballinabrackey’s favour.
Seneschalstown hit the road next Saturday for their Round 2 clash with Na Fianna.
