Nobber 1-11 (14) Slane 1-13 (16)
Nobber opened their Division 4 league campaign by welcoming Slane to their home grounds on a sunny Sunday morning last. Both sides will meet again in August in Round one of the Junior Championship. A perfect morning for football with the pitch conditions and weather proving favourable for both players and spectators.
The opening quarter of the game proved a tight affair with little separating the sides. Maynooth University student Conor Owens was a thorn in Slane’s defence and registered two points for the black and ambers. Midfielder Niall Farrell with the other score for Derek Walsh’s charges. With the new rules in play there were lots of 50-50 balls contested around the middle of the park with Thomas Murtagh proving dominant for the Nobber men throughout. Lorcan McEntee concluded the scoring in the first half with a well taken penalty into the village end goals.
Half-time score – Nobber 1-3 (6) Slane 0-6 (6)
Nobber started the second half well with another well taken score from Owens and a placed ball from corner forward Dale Larkin. However, the Boynesiders of Slane raised a green flag to leave them leading by 1 – 8 v 1 – 6. The blue and white of Slane increased their lead to 4 points as the game developed. Further scores from Larkin, Farrell and midfielder Murtagh kept the Deesiders within touching distance going into the final minutes. Brendan Heffernan managed to kick a fine point into the scoreboard end goals proving that age is just a number and that if Stephen Cluxton can do it he can do it as well.
The North Meath men of Nobber may look back at this game as a missed opportunity in terms of scoring chances but will take learning from it going into the rest of the league campaign.
Next up for Nobber is an away fixture v Drumbaragh on Sunday, March 23 at 11 AM.
