Meath Hill 2-09 Simonstown Gaels 3-14

Meath Hill travelled to Simonstown on a cold Friday evening looking to get off to a good start in Division 2.

It was Simonstown who opened the score within the first two minutes of the game. Meath Hill hit back with their own score through Ryan Shekleton with a finely struck two pointer, however that would be Meath Hills last score for 15 minutes. Simonstown hit a real purple patch during that time scoring 2-04 without reply. With the game being played at a frantic pace, it was very much end-to-end stuff with chances a plenty for both teams during the first half. Meath Hill eventually got back on the scoresheet with points come from Jack McMahon and Sean Owens with Ryan Owens battling hard and winning many kick outs throughout the course of the game. Meath Hill finished the scoring of the first half with a goal through Sean Owens off a long pass inside from Jack Slavin, who put in a good performance on the night.

Half time score: Meath Hill 1-04 Simonstown 2-08

Simonstown got off to the perfect start getting a goal right off the throw in. Meath Hill will feel disappointed for not converting more of their chances who were much improved in the second half. Meath Hill eventually got on the scoreboard in the second half with two converted frees from Ryan Shekleton. Meath Hill continued to press and put Simonstown under pressure around the kickout but couldn’t close the gap. Simonstown were awarded an easy 13m free after confusion over the rules which stretched their lead once again. Sean Owens hit back with another point from play. Meath Hill were unlucky not to have their second goal of the game through brilliant work from Ryan Owens who weaved his through the defence, setting up Jamie Slavin who dragged his effort wide. Ryan Shekleton, who was accurate from placed balls, converted another free to keep Meath Hill in the game. Simonstown eventually got going again kicking their second and third point of the second half on the 52nd and 53rd minute. Meath Hill were awarded a penalty shortly after which was drilled home by Dominic Yorke and a quick point of the boot of Jack McMahon helped reduce the deficit to five. These would be the last scores of the game for Meath Hill with Simonstown hitting the three remaining points of the game.
