Div 4 FL: Good start for Longwood

March 17, 2025

Longwood's Ryan Moore

Longwood’s footballers got their Division 4 league campaign off to a winning start with a narrow win over a typically tenacious Carnaross team on Friday night.

On what was an ideal evening for football, both teams served up an entertaining game for the spectators in attendance.

While the new rules may have caused some confusion, understandable given how much change has been introduced, they also made for a more exciting spectacle and the sides adopted a positive approach throughout.

Two-pointers were a major talking point with sharp-shooters such as Ryan Moore and Anthony Healy (Longwood) and Paddy McDermott (Carnaross) availing of opportunities from the fringes of the 40-metre arc.

With so many players away on intercounty duty, Aaron Ennis will have been delighted to get two points on the board.  It gives the team something to build on in the weeks ahead.

Congratulations to Sandijs Buls who made his adult debut for Longwood.  An exceptionally talented juvenile goalkeeper, we look forward to seeing Sandijs develop further over the coming years.

Dominic Finnegan and Sean Carpenter also made their league debuts for Longwood and both lads made important contributions over the hour.  These boys will be great additions to the club.

Longwood: Sandijs Buls, Cian O’Sullivan, Sean Carpenter, Adam Leacy, Dominic Finnegan (0-2), Tomás O’Brien (0-1), Bob Maguire (0-1), Niall Mulvey, Sean Sheridan (0-1), Ryan Moore (1-5), Anthony Healy (0-4), Ciaran Sheridan, Gavin Griffith (0-3), Adrian Maguire, Louis Butler (0-1). Subs: Ben McLoughlin, Mark Kennedy, Josh Meagher, David Coloe, Donal Stagg, Jason Kerrigan, Ross Healy.

The second round of the league sees Longwood travel to Ballinacree to play St Brigid’s next Sunday morning.

Before that, our hurlers tackle Killyon on Tuesday night in the 3rd round of the Brendan Davis Cup.
