The visitors came away with the spoils in this J M Food Services, Football League Division 2, Round 1 match played in Ardcath last Thursday evening, March 13th.
St Vincents 2-09 Rathkenny 2-11
Referee Liam Reddy threw up the ball just on 8pm to start the Division 2 campaign. The hosts were first on the scoreboard with a point from play as the clock ticked towards the one-minute mark. Rathkenny won the resultant kick out and managed the ball up the field where Oisin Cummins-Fuller was in enough space to send over the visitors opening score as we approached two minutes of play. The full forward was on hand ninety seconds later to finish to the net after good approach play from David Curtis who found James Macken who in turn punched the ball to the onrushing Cummins-Fuller to bury to the net. In the ninth minute, Jeaic Timmons created the space to send over the visitors second point of the evening and Rathkenny led by four points. The hosts sent over a point on twelve minutes and added to their tally when a pointed effort dropped short, but the home side eventually got to the ball and finished to the net to level matters with thirteen minutes played.
Rathkenny half-forward Patrick Knowles sent the visitors back in front with a lovely score off the left boot. This was quickly followed up with a point from the right boot of roving half back Christy Meade. As the clock approached the twenty second minute David Curtis sent over a long range two pointer and Rathkenny were up by four once more. The hosts pulled one back from a pointed free but hit two wides as we approached the break. There was still time for Eoghan Heavey and David Curtis to close out Rathkennys first half account with pointed efforts. St Vincents 1-3 Rathkenny 1-8.
The hosts got the opening score of the second half when inside thirty seconds a pointed effort dipped under the Rathkenny crossbar to reduce the deficit to two points. Rathkenny opened their second half account from a David Curtis free. Both teams then received yellow cards for an altercation in front of the dugouts. Rathkenny put some more daylight between the sides when firstly Eoghan Heavey sent over from a fisted effort, before Max McKenna split the posts with a great effort from play. Thirty-nine minutes played and the gap was out to five points. The hosts had a mini purple patch with the next four points, a point from play was followed by a two pointer free and finally another point from play as we reached the three-quarter point with the minimum between the sides. We then went through a scoreless eight-minute spell as numerous efforts went short and wide. The all-important score of the half from a Rathkenny perspective came when a slick passing move ended with Oisin Cummins-Fuller blasting to the net to open a four-point gap once more with fifty-three minutes on the clock. Both sides were then guilty of a couple of wides a piece as we went into injury time. The hosts sent over a two-pointer free in the sixty-first minute, but Rathkenny hung on to claim both points.
