Donaghmore Ashbourne's Matthew Scanlon gets away from his marker during the Reserve Cup Division 1 final against St. Colmcilles at Ashbourne

A first trophy of the year for our adult men’s footballers in their first competition of the year was secured at the club last Wednesday night. PHOTOS

After a shaky start when a few chances went begging the lads slowly got to grips with the game. Michael Deegan turned inside to fire a goal to the net on 20 minutes with the team pushing on from there with a series of points as Stephen Carton, Kevin Fenton and Daniel Doherty all got among the scores. Ethan Tormey also raided forward to help himself to a goal in an energetic display.

In the second half midfielder Cael Sullivan also got right up the pitch to finish neatly to the net with a low shot to the corner. Centre back Shaun Byrne also came up to fire over a point into the wind with Mattie Doran taking his tally to two points. Alex Ward came off the bench to make two good stops late on as St. Colmcille kept plugging away.

Afterwards, captain Sean Curran went up to accept the trophy after a good all round team performance, particularly defensively in the second half when the opposition had the breeze. It was a good campaign for the squad, who had group stage wins over Gaeil Colmcille, Navan O’Mahonys and Dunshaughlin.

Many thanks to referee Robbie Barrett for taking charge of the game and managing the many challenges of the new rules very well.
