Syddan 2-15 St. Ultans 1-14
Close to midday on Sunday 2nd March Syddan Team and Management was unsure if the win over St Ultan’s would bring them to a final, or a semi final decider. As the other group results filtered in, it emerged that a semi final place against Clann na Gael beckoned.
The home side started the better of this encounter will a point from play. Straight from Ciaran Farrelly’s kick out the white flag was raised again to go to 2 ahead. Syddan’s mid field started to contest the kickout, a perfect pass from Cathal Dardis to Daire Rowe and Syddan got the scoring started. Daire followed up with a point from a free, Ben Blakemore followed up with another score to put the visitors ahead. St Ultan’s got on a scoring spree with 3 points from play without reply. With some good passing moves and quickly moving through the St. Ultan’s defence, Syddan’s Ben Blakemore found himself bearing down on goal, and took the opportunity with open arms to bury the ball in the net. Within a minute, Eoghan Dillon gained vital position in the middle and found Daire Rowe who did not waste the goal opportunity, Syddan finds themselves with a 4-point lead midway through the first half. Ciaran Farrelly made an excellent save, from a shot straight down his throat, but recovered excellently to get the ball out of danger. Syddan thriving from momentum kept the scored board ticking over with a 2-pointer free from Daire Rowe. Daire was on the score sheet again with a point from play and Michael Fedigan followed up with another point from play. Syddan had an 8-point lead with 5 minutes remaining in the half. St Ultan’s fought back with 2 more points from play, but Syddan quickly erased them with a point from play from Daire Rowe, and with some excellent possession control from Ryan Summersby, he found Michael Fedigan who took another point from play to put Syddan 8 points to the good at half time. Syddan 2 – 9, St Ultans 0 – 7.
Daire Rowe started the scoring in the second half with a point from play. St Ultan’s got to grips again and scored 3 unanswered points, 1 from play and 2 from placed balls. Syddan fans were delighted to see midfielder Sean Clare come off the bench, recovered from a serious injury he received last year. Sean was quickly back into the speed of a competitive game and got a nice score from play. From the subsequent kickout, Cillian Rafferty was quickest to react, gathering the ball and soloing forward to take his own score. Eoghan Dillon slotted over a free to give Syddan a 9-point lead midway through. With the extended lead, Syddan took the foot of the gas and St Ultan’s were in recovery mode and took 3 points from frees to leave 6 between the teams. Ryan Summersby found himself in the attacking half and took a fine point form play. Ciaran Farrelly was called from his line again, and while he saved the initial effort the rebound was placed into an empty net. Both teams exchanged points in the closing stages.

Syddan will now face Clann na Gael in the semi-final this Wednesday 5th March in Ballinlough with a throw in time of 8pm. The winners will play St. Brigids in the final.
