Rathkenny's David Curtis

The visitors came away with the spoils in this Feis Cup Group C Round 3 match played in Rathkenny last Sunday morning, March 2nd.

Rathkenny 0-13 Summerhill 2-11

Rathkenny, playing their first match since the passing of Club President Sean Curtis, began with a first minute point from the right boot of centre back Padraig McKeever.

The visitors replied with a point of their own inside the two-minute mark. Following a five-minute spell of wides from both sides, the hosts retook the lead when Noah Jenkinson found enough space to pop over from play. Again, the visitors restored parity within sixty seconds and indeed took the lead for the first time with a point from play in the ninth minute. The lead was extended further with a two pointer on ten minutes.

Rathkenny reduced the lead when David Curtis sent over with 12 minutes on the clock. Rathkenny custodian Sean Gillespie came out bravely to prevent a Summerhill goal on 13 minutes. Joey Curtis reduced the gap to the minimum when he sent over in the 14th minute, before Oisin Cummins-Fuller had an effort blocked out for a 45.

The game swung favourably for the visitors when they netted twice inside a minute to lead 2-6 to 0-5. The hosts had another goal attempt from Joey Curtis blocked out for a 45. Corbin Jenkinson then found space to pop over Rathkennys fifth point of the half on 21 minutes. Summerhill extended the lead again with a point on 23 minutes. With three minutes left of the half, referee Keith Sheerin consulted his umpires following an incident along the roadside sideline and a red card ensued for Summerhill, with a yellow card for Rathkennys James Macken. The hosts then reduced the gap when James Macken dummied a shot before sending over from just inside the arc on 30 minutes. Summerhill managed to send over the final first half score two minutes into injury time to leave it Rathkenny 0-6 Summerhill 2-7 at the break.

Rathkenny made three substitutions at the break, and it took three minutes to send over the first point of the half thanks to the boot of Max McKenna. There followed two further points from Rathkenny through Noah Jenkinson in the eight minute and Max McKenna from a free in the 11th minute. Summerhill had been shown two yellow cards during those Rathkenny opening three points. Adam Byrne was shown a yellow card on 13 minutes as the game slowed significantly with Summerhill not requiring to keep anyone back as they had been reduced to 12 players. James Macken finally added to Rathkennys total with a pointed effort 17 minutes into the second half and a glance at the scoreboard showed three between the sides. Summerhill finally added to their account when sending over a two-pointer free with 22 minutes on the clock. Adam Byrne was then shown a black then red card for the hosts as we entered the final five minutes. When referee Keith Sheerin blew the final whistle, he had played three and a half minutes injury time. In those subsequent eight minutes both sides added to their total.
