Tailteann Cup: Kilmainham leave Ballinacree empty handed

March 03, 2025

Kilmainham's Declan Mullen

St. Brigid's 2-9, Kilmainham 0-8

Kilmainham headed for Ballinacree for the 10.30am throw in, in high spirits following a good team performance and win against Nobber in round two. We could have had a goal in the first minute. A brilliant run through the middle by Mickey Newman, left him bearing down on the St. Brigid’s goal. The ball spilled from his hands, and he decided to take the shot on goal soccer style. The ball was heading for the St. Brigid’s net only for a brilliant save by the St. Brigid’s net minder. We were winning our fair share of possession around the middle of the field but our shooting and shot selection was poor. A youthful St. Brigid’s side were much more direct and were feeding good ball into their lively forwards. Direct play that was rewarded with two goals in a ten-minute spell to put them in the driving seat. Declan Mullen got our first score of the game from a tight angle. Mickey Hoey added another two points to complete our scoring at half time. Kilmainham with it all to do at half time.

Half time score: St. Brigid’s 2-5, Kilmainham 0-3.

Kilmainham won the throw up and another powerful run through the St. Brigid’s defence by Mickey Newman set centre back Shane Morgan bearing down on goal. The goal was on, but he opted to drill it over the crossbar. A brief purple patch was to follow for us as we looked to claw back the half time deficit. A Mickey Hoey free cut the deficit as St. Brigid’s were struggling for scores. Kilmainham were eventually getting to grips with the St. Brigid’s dangermen and started to turn the ball over from the St. Brigid’s attacks. A Mickey Newman point and another from Freddie Newman had the deficit back to four points. That unfortunately was as close as we got on the scoreboard. St. Brigid’s won a couple of breaks around midfield and from there they finally got on the score board to swing back the momentum and see out the match. A very good free from the left boot of Freddie Newman was our last score of the match. St. Brigid’s ran out deserving seven-point winners on the day.

That ends our involvement in this year’s Tailteann Cup competition. A productive 3 matches where plenty was learned. All players were involved, and it was a great chance to get running into the legs as the league approaches. It was great to see Darren King back involved on the pitch of play after a long layoff. All the hard work is paying off Dareen. Keep it up. A speedy return to play to Danny Newman after a broken finger.

A big thank you to everyone that came out to support the lads on a cold morning in Ballinacree. The lads have a few weeks to get some more training under their belt before their opening division 3 league opener against Walterstown in Kilmainham on Sat 22nd March at 4pm.
