Tailteann Cup: Narrow loss for Kilmainham

February 08, 2025

Kilmainham's Mickey Newman

Kilmainham 1-10, Carnaross 2-9

Our first competitive match of 2025 saw us play Carnaross in Round 1 of the Tailteann Cup on a bitterly cold night on Thursday 6th February 2025. The small die-hard supporters of both teams must be commended for braving the elements in support of their teams.

This was our new player/manager Mickey Newman’s first competitive outing of the new year. The game started off cagey enough with both teams having a lot of possession without making much inroads into each other’s halves. Long balls kicked in were getting swallowed up by both sets of backs. Both teams were guilty of some poor shot selections and there was a lot of turnovers by both teams. A sweetly hit 45 from Mickey Newman settled us. Michael Hoey tagged on a couple of frees and suddenly we seemed in control of the match. A long ball into the square was fisted to the Kilmainham net on 17 minutes in a hammer blow. Freddie Newman then found the Carnaross net on 19 minutes after a brilliant team move. Kilmainham back in control. Carnaross then hit 3 points in a row before the break to keep them in contention as we headed for half time. Our lads will be disappointed that they did not have a bigger lead at half time.

Half time score Kilmainham 1-5, Carnaross 1-3

Kilmainham started the half on the attack. A marauding run by Mickey Newman through the centre of the Carnaross defence set up Seanie Mahon for a good goal chance but unfortunately it didn’t find the net. The loss of Larry Morgan at half time from midfield was a blow as he had been playing well. From here Carnaross seemed. A point on 6 minutes followed by a 9th minute goal put Carnaross in control of this match. The momentum had shifted. Both teams were guilty of some wayward shooting with quite a few balls dropped short into the respective keepers. Mickey Hoey with a free and point from play kept us in the game but Carnaross were always dangerous on the counterattack. A point from Terence Daly and Andy Arkins cut the deficit to two points as time was running out. Kilmainham had enough chances to get at least a draw in this game but can have no complaints about the result as too many wides/short balls proved costly in the end. A youthful Carnaross side running out two-point winners in a good sporting match.

Overall, a very positive performance by the team in their first competitive outing of the year. There was some excellent team play with good organisation and communication evident on the field. It was great to see Joe Mahon make a return to the field. He could have had the headlines had his last-minute goal attempt found the Carnaross net. Our lads will play Nobber at home in Kilmainham on Saturday 22nd February with a 2pm throw in. Please come out and support the lads.
