Charlie Murphy Carnaross

Carnaross 2-09 Kilmainham 1-10

Carnaross marked their return to Tailteann Cup action, after a 2 year hiatus in the Tailteann Shield, with a closely fought win over near-neighbours Kilmainham.

Kilmainham began the brighter, landing 3 frees in the first 10 minutes. The home side, managed by Paddy Bates, left a number of efforts short as they struggled to get to grips with the wintery conditions. The Hoops eventually landed their first score courtesy of the top scorer on the night, Charlie Murphy. Charlie pounced on a loose ball in the square to fist home a goal to kickstart the Ross’ challenge. Kilmainham were getting the better of the early encounters however and they responded with a quickfire 1-1 to stretch the lead to 5 points. This was Carnaross first match of any description of 2025 but they eventually began to click with Charlie Murphy adding another fine point followed closely by Paddy McDermott converting a free. The assist for Paddy’s score must go to full back Tomás Plunkett who was quite vocal in pointing out Kilmainham’s lack of 3 forwards in the opponents half. The new rules were well applied by Adrian Corcoran leading to an end to an end battle, with little to no let up. Paddy Morris played himself into the game and he finished off a fine move with a deft finish to leave the half time score: Kilmainham 1-5 Carnaross 1-3.

The second half began with a bang as Seanie Mahon broke through on goals only to see his shot saved by the returning Shane McNiffe in goals. The third quarter belonged to the home side as they rattled off 4 points in a row. Charlie Murphy was proving himself to be an able target man and was causing the men in red and black some headaches. He added 2 points from play before Paddy McDermott scored a free from just inside the 2 point scoring arc. As the intensity increased, Paddy Farnan broke forward for a superb score. Kilmainham replied with a point as they refused to lie down. Their two most influential players, Michael Hoey and Michael Newman, were relentless throughout. The move of the game came when the ball was rattled into the back of the net by Oisín Farrelly after a fine free flowing move involved involving numerous Carnaross players. This finally gave Carnaross some breathing space but Kilmainham continued to trouble the scoreboard leaving a single score in it with minutes to go. Luke Gillic excelled during kickouts and was a constant presence throughout. Darragh O’Reilly converted a free from the right but Kilmainham equaled this to keep the pressure on. The final score of the game was a lovely effort from play by Oisín Yore. Kilmainham’s search for a winner proved fruitless as the Ross rearguard was well marshalled by Cormac Yore and Ian Donoghue.

Carnaross will now travel to Ballinacree for their round 2 encounter against St. Brigid’s on Sunday February 16th at 11am.
