Tailteann Shield: Holders make winning start

February 07, 2025

Moynalty's Bryan McCormack

Cortown 1-09 Moynalty 1-14

Cortown hosted Moynalty on Thursday evening as both sides got their 2025 football campaign off the ground and played their first official game under the 'new rules'. The sides met in what was a repeat of last year's Tailteann Shield final, which Moynalty won by a solitary point.

The home side started the strongest, with a 3-1 lead notched up inside the first 10 minutes. Ollie Sheridan and Pauric O'Connor brought the game back level with a point each, but Cortown again kicked on with some impressive forward play of their own. Moynalty were forced into an early substitution as Joe Gilsenan was forced off with Jake Smyth replacing him. Ollie Sheridan kicked two quick points before half time to momentarily bring Moynalty ahead for the first time, however Cortown responded with a 2 pointer on the stroke of half time to leave the halftime score Cortown 0-08 Moynalty 0-07.

Moynalty were much stronger in the second half, with Moynalty's first 5 points all being from different scorers including a brilliant strike from goalkeeper Johnny Lynch. The defensive work in the second half was the platform that the forwards built on, with Michael Lynch, Nicholas McKenna and Paddy Gallagher all playing outstanding in the full back line to keep Cortowns forwards quiet. The turning point in the game came in the 25th minute of the second half when Bryan McCormack latched onto a perfectly weighted pass from Adam Reilly to bury the ball in the Cortown net and put daylight between the teams for the first time on the night. Substitutes James Lynch and Cillian Gaynor both added to the scoreline towards the end as Moynalty ran out eventual winners on a scoreline Cortown 1-09 Moynalty 1-14.

A special mention to Cathal Donoghue, Sean MacMahon, Joe McMahon and Caoimhin Cussen who all made their competitive debuts for Moynalty, with each impressing and Cathal providing a first half point. Moynalty return to action on Thursday February 13th with a home game against St Mary's with throw in at 8pm.
