St. Nicholas N.S. Longwood 6-5 O’Growney N.S. Athboy 4-7

A five star display from Kayla McCann saw St. Nicholas N.S. Longwood win their very first Allianz Meath Cumann na mBunscol Girls Division 1 Shield Football title. The third game of the day at St. Lomans Park Trim was a ten goal thriller from start to finish.

Éabha Gough raised the first green flag of the game for the Athboy girls before McCann hit back with two outstanding goals. O’Growney dominated after that. Full forward Evie Moran increased their goal tally to three and along with a brace of points from Angie Nicol they were five points in front  before McCann again and Robyn Flynn goaded to leave Longwood a point in arrears at the break 4-2 to 4-1.

O’Growney extended their lead with points from the impressive Nicholas, Janine (2) and Angie early in the second and by the end of the third quarter they held a 4-7 to 4-3 advantage. Longwood dominated the last ten minutes. McCann got her fourth goal, Leena Weir levelled the game before McCann gave them the lead and finished the game in style with her 5th goal. Soon after Jimmy Walsh blew the final whistle to spark wild scenes of jubilation.
