Meath LGFA Chairperson Colm McManus presents the Junior E Football Championship Cup to Clann na nGael captain Aoife McLoughlin

Clann na nGael 2-7 Dee Rangers 1-9

As Storm Ashley descended over the County, The Meath LGFA Junior E championship final between both 2nd teams from Clann na nGael & Dee Rangers was played in very windy miserable conditions in Grangegodden pitch on Sunday. Well known to each other this is the 2nd time both these teams have met in finals this year, with The Clann na nGael side just edging a win in the Division 7 League final earlier in the year. The girls from CnG well used to playing in miserable weather conditions were not deterred, with the wind making it difficult to play football both teams knew scores were going to be hard come by,  Clann na nGael were 1st to put a score on the board with a point from Cara McNamee, the number 10 had an outstanding game for the Athboy/Rathcairn side scoring all 4 points in the 1st half. With both teams battling hard and some fine defending by the Clann na nGael backs, full back Niamh Collins steady defending aided on either side by her name sake our 2nd Niamh Collins and Captain Aoife McLoughlin the girls worked extremely hard to get the ball out to the awaiting half back line of Niamh Brogan, Alanagh Hanley & Amy Collins, No 7 Niamh Brogan who could possibly be also contender for player of the match with her consistent defending which she has shown throughout the whole championship. Dee Ranger’s added their 1st score a point midway through the 1st half and brought the game to a draw with a goal, in the 2nd quarter.

With sides level at half time, the wind was going to play a huge factor in achieving scores for both teams, a free awarded to Clann na nGael saw Cara McNamee step up and slightly aided by the wind landed the ball in the back of the net, followed by a point from Kaithlyn Gallagher bringing the score to 1 -05 to 1-02 early in the 3rd quarter. With goal keeper Byrna Cassidy’s kick outs reaching the intended Roisin Heaney & Niamh Brogan and brilliant work rate  from Grace Kelly & Leah Doherty in the full forward line and the ever reliable Roisin Heaney in mid field  who ran against the wind won a great ball in the middle of the field and dully kicked a 2nd goal for Clann na nGael putting them ahead by 6 points, as both teams played better against the wind Dee Rangers clocked up the score’s with 4 unanswered points in the later stages of the 4th quarter.  With another point from Cara McNamee, it was looking like extra time would be needed to separate the teams, but in the dying minutes of the game a free awarded to Clann na nGael saw Cara McNamee step up & put the ball over the bar to secure a 1 point win for the girls in Green & Gold. Meath LGFA Chair Colm McManus presented the cup to Captain Aoife McLoughlin, with Cara McNamee picking up well deserved player of the match award. Well done to both teams who played out a very sporting game under the constant battling from Storm Ashely.
