Dunboyne 1-15 Summerhill 0-14
Dunboyne left it late to see off Keegan Cup holders Summerhill in this highly entertaining Meath Senior Football Championship quarter final at Pairc Tailteann.
St Peters were reduced to 14 men just before the half time whistle when Cathal Lacey picked up a second yellow.
The holders made a bright start with points from Conor Fraye and Barry Dardis. By the 15th minute the challengers were 0-6 to 0-3 in front. Meath captain Ronan Jones opened their account, the impressive Donal Lenihan (3), Michael Murphy and Lacey putting Ger Robinson men on the front foot. Lacey kicked his second point before his dismissal and Dunboyne took a 0-9 to 0-6 lead to the dressing room.
As expected the reigning champions roared back into the game and points from Adam McDonnell and Conor Frayne (2) had the teams level inside the opening five minutes of the second half. Dunboyne nudged themselves in front by the midway point before Summerhill were reduced to 14, referee Andrew Smith showing a black card to half back McDonnell. Lenihan and a superb long distance free from keeper Liam Byrne put Dunboyne three up with ten minutes left.
Frayne with his 7th and 8th and a Dardis double had the sides all square with injury time looming. The large crowd in attendance wouldn’t have said no to extra time but Dunboyne had other ideas. Byrne landed another monster of a free to break the Summerhill resistance and in the final play of the game Craig Lowndes was on hand to finish to the net for the games only goal.
Dunboyne's reward is a semi final against neighbours Dunshuaghlin in two weeks time.
