Adam Kerins Carnaross with Charlie Smith Cortown during the Meath Junior B FC quarter final at Carlanstown

Carnaross 2-14 Cortown 1-12

Near neighbours Cortown and Carnaross served up an engrossing encounter in Thursday night's Junior B quarter final.

Cortown registered the first score of the night in Carlanstown from a free. Carnaross responded well with 4 points on the spin from Paddy Morris, Paddy McDermott and a brace from Dermot McGee. Cortown were playing with a real purpose however and reduced the gap to one with 2 more frees. Charlie Murphy and McDermott stretched out the lead but again Cortown replied with 2 from play as their full forward line excelled. With the game in the balance, up stepped the Yore brothers. Firstly, Cormac's late run reaped dividends when he slipped the ball under McGeartys outstretched legs for the first goal of the night. Oisín Yore than added a point to leave the Ross up by 4 at the break.

The second half burst into life with Cortown registering a goal of their own which their play deserved. 2 minutes later,  the ball was back in the Cortown net after Charlie Murphy overturned possession in the small rectangle. Carnaross hit a purple patch registering 3 of the next 4 scores with a brace from Darragh O’Reilly and a minor from McDermott to stretch the lead to 6. The form book suggested that Carnaross would kick on but Cortown had other ideas. They lifted the intensity and landed 5 consecutive points to leave the minimum between the teams entering the final 5 minutes. Carnaross dug deep and finally ended Cortown's resistance through an Oisin Yore effort, a brace from Cian O’Reilly and the final score from McDermott.

It was a monumental battle that could've gone either way but Carnaross progress to the semi-final where they will meet high flying Kilmainhamwood.
