Gaeil Colmcille 1-06 St. Peter's, Dunboyne 2-08

Gaeil Colmcille bowed out of the Fairyhouse Steel Meath Senior Football Championship with five point defeat to St. Peter's, Dunboyne in Pairc Tailteann.

Gaeil Colmcille couldn't have asked for a better start and after St. Peter's tapping over the first free of the game in the 1st minute to give them an early lead but a 10 minute purple patch from the Gaeils saw them score 1-03 without response from Dunboyne.

Barry Farrelly levelled things up in the third minute and a brilliant run by John Gormley left him one on one with Liam Byrne in the Dunboyne goal, Gormley saw his shot saved but Adam Muldoon was on hand to follow up to put into the back of the net to give Kells the lead.

Brian Hanlon added a point from a free in the 9th minute after Andrew Gormley was bundled over and a second free from Beano in the 12th minute saw Gaeil Colmcille's lead pushed out to 5 points in a frantic start. Defensively Gaeil Colmcille answered their managers calls were holding Dunboyne at bay but for two frees in the 13th and 16th minute. The South Meath side got the first score from play in the 17th minute and it turned out to be the last of the half as Kells lead 1-03 to 0-04.

St. Peter's started the brightest in the second half and got the opening point of the half thanks to a Jack Kinlough run and point and in the 38th minute a free left the sides level once again on the day. With 45 minutes on Referee Keith Sheerins watch, Dunboyne got their first goal of the game after a looping ball into the square was gathered by Ronan Jones who turned and shot low to the back of the net.

With Kells now trailing by three and needing to win the game to qualify for the knockout stages got their first score in 41 minutes as Jonny Quigley pointed after he won the initial breaking ball. There was one between the sides when Andrew Gormley pointed one minute later and within two minutes the sides were level as Andrew Gormley saw his left footed shot drop short into the hands of Seamus Mattimoe who turned and fired over the bar.

With Gaeil Colmcille now in the ascendency they were struck with a sucker punch as in the 56th minute Dunboyne got their second goal of the game and left Kells with an uphill battle for the remainder of the game. As Kells went in search of a goal it was St. Peter's he counter attacked and grabbed two points to kill the game off.
