St. Vincents Michael McIvor

St Vincents 3-11 Dunderry 0-12

With a place in the knockout stages of the championship already secured, St. Vincent’s took to the field in Dunsany to face Dunderry knowing that avoiding defeat would see them progress to a semi-final. A minute of silence was held for Michael Murray, who had passed during the week, before referee Ciarán Flynn threw in the ball on a warm sunny day in Dunsany.

St. Vincent’s got off to a flyer with Michael McIvor winning the ball from the throw in. He passed to Gary Tuite who was fouled. The free was taken quickly to Adam Tuite who turned his man and laid it off to the onrushing McIvor who drove through the defence before firing to the back of the net. Gary Tuite pointed from a free 3 minutes later. The Ardcath men were wide of the mark with their next few shots, before Dunderry drew a point back from a free. Adam Tuite restored the 3-point lead when he picked up a loose ball near midfield and burst forward before slotting over a point. Dunderry cut the deficit with a point from play at close range and another from further out. Conor Harford was denied by the post after beating the Dunderry keeper, but Adam Tuite was again on hand to pop over a point from the rebound. He then brought his tally to 3 points when he fired over a lovely score from outside the D to leave 4 points between the sides after 18 minutes. Conor O’Brien won the kickout and passed to Patrick McGill who fired over a point from play. The men from Dunderry fought back gamely and pointed from play. The Dunderry keeper produced a fine save to deny Adam Tuite a goal, and with Ardcath men lining up to take the shot it was Patrick McGill who once again fired over. Dunderry got two points from frees either side of a pointed free from Michael McIvor to leave St. Vincent’s 4 points to the good at half-time.

Half Time, St Vincents 1-07 Dunderry 0-06

Some very good defending from St. Vincent’s at the start of the second half kept Dunderry at bay, before Nigel Hand popped over an early free. Conor O’Brien won a good turnover ball at midfield before passing to Conor Harford. Harford found Ryan Hand unmarked on his right and he cooly slotted the ball past the Dunderry keeper for St. Vincent’s second goal of the day. Gary Tuite then had a shot that did everything but go over the bar. It hit the left upright, came off the crossbar, hit the right upright before hitting the crossbar again. Conor O’Brien’s fisted effort from the rebound drifted wide. St. Vincent’s were playing with their tails up at this point. Gary Tuite made a great break from deep in his own half before passing to Adam Tuite. Despite tackles from 5 or 6 Dunderry men, Adam found a way to burst through and fire over his fourth point of the day. Shortly after Gary Tuite won the ball at midfield and fired into the full-forward line. Michael McIvor gathered the ball, turned his man and fired St. Vincent’s third goal to the back of the net. It was the 14th minute of the second half before Dunderry registered a score with a point from play. A well worked ball all the way up field finished with Matthew Tuite firing over a point. Dunderry committed all their players forward, except the full back, in the hopes of getting a score. A turnover ball was driven from deep by Michael McIvor into Adam Tuite after a Conor Harford block down. Adam Tuite appeared to be fouled as he lost control of the ball and was then penalised for the tackle on his marker. What followed were scenes that nobody wants to see in the game. When Ciarán Flynn managed to restore order he issued red cards to Adam Tuite, Tadhg Tuite, a Dunderry substitute and a member of the Dunderry management team. With St. Vincent’s down to 14 men, Dunderry tacked on 5 points from play in the final 5 minutes plus injury time, while the Ardcath men would add a pointed free from Nigel Hand to see them win by 8 points a progress to a semi-final.

St. Vincent’s top Group B with 3 wins from 3 and await the winners of St. Ultan’s v Clann na nGael from the Quarter Final. The Semi Final will be played on Saturday October 5th.
