August 27, 2024

Michael McIvor keeps possession for St. Vincents during their JFC clash with St. Brigids at Pairc Tailteann

St Vincents 0-13 St. Brigid’s 0-08

Páirc Tailteann was the venue for the second round of this year’s Junior Football Championship Group B clash of St. Vincent’s & St. Brigid’s. The Ballinacree men came out on top in this fixture last year, so the Ardcath men were determined to build on their good first round win and reverse the result.

Referee Padraic Coyle got the game under way, and it was St. Brigid’s who played with the strong wind in the first half. They won the throw-in and had the first point of the day inside the first minute from play. St. Vincent’s responded well and worked the ball down field quickly and equalised with a pointed free from Nigel Hand. Strong defending from both sides limited the scoring opportunities in the first 10 minutes. St. Brigid’s aided by the strong wind, kept St. Vincent’s outside the scoring zone. They added 2 points from play themselves, before adding 2 more from pointed frees to leave 4 points between the sides. It was to be the 23rd minute before Nigel Hand was to add to his tally with a pointed free. Adam Tuite worked his way forward after a great break by Conor Harford. Tuite popped over the Ardcath men’s first score from play. The men in maroon were getting a grip on the game and the conditions now. Stefan O’Neill started a move at the 65m line and got on the end of the ball after great work from his teammates. His shot on goal had the keeper beaten, but he was denied by the butt of the post. Gary Tuite was on hand to take the rebound and fire over the bar to leave just one point between the sides. St. Brigid’s got another point from play, before Adam Tuite jinked inside his marker and fired over a point to leave the minimum between the sides at the break.

Half Time, St Vincents 0-05 St. Brigid’s 0-06

The second half saw St. Vincent’s play with the strong wind as St. Brigid’s struggled to get within shooting distance against it. The opening score of the half came from Patrick McGill who pointed from near the 45m line to draw the sides level. Strong defending from the Ardcath men kept St. Brigid’s at bay until they pointed from a free after 7 minutes of the half. Adam Tuite popped up with the equalising score from play after a period of good pressure. St. Brigid’s kept up the fight, but their chances were limited. They had an opportunity on goal after 15 minutes of the half but after a bit of a scramble Niall Tallon came away with the ball. Nigel Hand restored St. Vincent’s lead with a pointed free. Gary Tuite extended the lead with another pointed free before Nigel Hand extended the lead to 3 points with another free. As the clock ran down St. Brigid’s pointed from a free to reduce the deficit. Adam Tuite brought his tally to 4 points with a great score from play, following a quick sideline ball from Mark Crawley. Michael McIvor added two points in injury time, one from play and one from a free outside the 45m line.

Next up for St. Vincent’s is a Round 3 clash with Dunderry on Saturday September 7th in Dunsany at  6:00PM.
