Rathkenny's Keith Curtis

Skyrne kicked over a late forty-five to earn a draw in this Fairyhouse Steel sponsored Meath Senior Football Championship Group D Round Two game played in Simonstown, last Saturday evening, August 24th.

Rathkenny 0-08 Skyrne 0-08

Referee David Gough threw up the ball and Rathkenny won possession and with forty-four seconds on the clock, sent over the opening score through a Keith Curtis free. Skyrne were then down to fourteen players when they received a black card for a clumsy tackle with two and a half minutes played. Within a minute Keith Curtis extended the Rathkenny lead with a free. Skyrne reduced the deficit when they sent over their first score from a fifth minute free. The scoreboard was not troubled again for thirteen minutes, as numerous wides were chalked up before Skyrne levelled matters with an eighteenth minute free. More wides and short attempts followed before David Curtis sent over a free on twenty-three minutes. This proved to be the final score of the half as it finished with both sides having off the mark efforts.

The men from Tara opened their scoring account with a brace of efforts from play to lead for the first time on thirty-four minutes. During the next six minutes, Rathkenny hit their own purple patch when hitting four points on the bounce. Three points from play from Keith Curtis were followed up by a point from Noah Jenkinson after a mark was called. Five further wides followed in the next nine minutes before Skyrne hit a brace of points from play to narrow the gap to the minimum. With six minutes remaining of normal time, Rathkenny were reduced to fourteen players after David Gough consulted with one of his umpires. Within a couple of minutes, numbers were evened out when Skyrne received a black card. Rathkenny edged back two in front when Keith Curtis sent over a free with two and a half minutes of normal time left. With sixty minutes on the clock Skyrne left just one between the sides again with a pointed free. Ninety seconds into the five minutes of additional time (advised to the management teams), Skyrne were reduced to thirteen following their third black card of the game. Rathkenny then saw a free land short before Skyrne saw two efforts go the wrong side of the post as we ticked into 66 minutes. Rathkenny defended in numbers as Skyrne attempted to level matters and one final effort was blocked out for a forty-five. It was duly dispatched over the bar as the clock ticked past sixty-seven minutes. David Gough then blew for full time from the resultant kick out. Rathkenny will face Ratoath in the third round as Skyrne take on Trim.
