SFC Group A: Holders survive stern 'Bracks' test

Keegan Cup holders Summerhill survived a stern test from Ballinabrackey in this entertaining opening round of the Meath SFC played in breezy conditions at Lomans Park Trim. The ‘Hill’ recorded a comfortable win when there two met in the Division 1 FL final last month.

Conor Gillespie’s men went in at the break 0-4 to 0-3 in front. Playing with the wind Eoghan Frayne got the scoreboard working but Ballinabrackey were 0-3 to 0-2 in from 15 minutes in. Damien Carroll with two glorious points from the outside of the boot and a Danny Quinn free had Trevor Bannon’s men in control. Kevin Ryan who finished with four points from play and Conor Frayne raised white flags to give the reigning champions a narrow interval lead.

The intensity of the game picked up in the second half. Ryan and substitute Barry Dardis increased Summerhill’s lead early in the second half but Ballinabrackey refused to give in. A brace each from Quinn and another substitute Seamus Curry had the sides level 0-7 each with ten minutes remaining. Curry again and Conor Frayne exchanged points as the game entered the closing stages. Eoghan Frayne nudged Summerhill in front and John Lavelle sent over the insurance point before the final whistle.

Ballinabrackey take on Donaghmore Ashbourne in round 2, Summerhill go to Pairc Tailteann for a clash with Dunshaughlin.
