JFC Group A: Syddan come up short in Kilmainham

August 12, 2024

Syddan's Gary McManus breaks the tackle during their JFC clash with St. Ultans at Kilmainham

Syddan 0-12  St Ultans 1-13

Two very evenly-matched teams arrived at Kilmainham on a sunny Saturday evening to kick-start their championship season with a victory. St Ultan’s came out on top at the end of the evening after a strong final quarter showing which brought them over the line.

The first 20 minutes were very tight with each team trading score for score. Daire Rowe was sharp on the frees for Syddan and Michael Fedigan & Ben Blakemore’s scored excellent points from distance. St. Ultan’s were reduced to 14 men for a black card offence after 15 minutes and had to dig deep to stop Syddan benefiting from their numerical advantage. Eoghan Dillon hit a great point from the sideline just before the interval with Cormac Rowe following up soon after to send Syddan two points up at half time.

Into the second-half and, once again, each team went point for point with Daire and Cormac Rowe getting the Syddan scores. 15 minutes in and Syddan had established a three point lead with the momentum was with the men in green and gold hoops. A high ball came in the square which was fielded by Syddan’s Micheal Fedigan who struck the post with his goal bound effort. This reprieve gave St. Ultan’s hope, they began to get the upperhand and scores from play and frees brought them into the lead.

With three minutes to go, St. Ultan’s scored a rebound goal despite the best efforts of Myles Avers which put them four points up and they hanged on to that lead the full time whistle.

Full time score: Syddan 0-12 – 1-13 St Ultans

An unfortunate loss for Syddan who look to re-group and go again for their must win second round of the championship game against Slane in Gibbstown on Sunday 25th of August at 5pm.

Finally, everyone at Syddan GFC would like to extend their thoughts and best wishes to Sean Clare for a speedy and full recovery following the serious injury he sustained in this match.
